Schneider, Kennedy, and Bush win Local Democrats' Contest
June 30, 2012 - (Highland Park, IL): Brad Schneider of Deerfield, Chris Kennedy of Libertyville, and Melinda Bush of Grayslake won the Tenth Congressional District Democrats' summer candidate donation contest. Hundreds of Democrats voted in the contest.
Tenth Dems, a grassroots volunteer group, held the online contest to give local Democratic candidates a final boost before the end of the second quarter. Members were asked to vote for their favorite candidate and share links to the contest on Facebook and Twitter, generating buzz for the 57 candidates running in the district. The three winners received financial contributions.
Brad Schneider is running for the US Congress and he would be the type of representative that the 10th District needs. He has the business and job growth experience to challenge Republican claims to supremacy on those issues, while adhering to the progressive policies that Democrats hold near and dear. Together with President Obama, he will move America forward, not back to the past. Brad Schneider's campaign received $250.
After 32 years of Republican control in the scandal-plagued office of the Lake County State’s Attorney, Chris Kennedy will restore public confidence in the office. A former Assistant State’s Attorney and school board member, Kennedy has successfully advocated for people with developmental disabilities. He has also helped pass laws to provide additional police training and to increase access to health insurance and community services. Chris Kennedy's campaign received $500.
Melinda Bush brings equally strong experience to her bid for the state Senate. As a Lake County Board member she has proven her ability to get results. She fought against a huge development planned for Grayslake. What could have been a desert of foreclosed homes instead became Rollins Savanna, a major nature preserve, enjoyed by birders, hikers, bikers and families. Melinda Bush's campaign received $150.
Tenth Dems has already contributed thousands of dollars to candidates at the top of the Democratic ticket, including several thousand in the last week. In addition to working at offices, the group's summer interns help staff candidates' events, talk to voters at street fairs and sidewalk sales, and walk in parades. Tenth Dems has recruited more than 50 Deputy Voter Registrars and precinct committeemen in the past month.
"To build a strong party, we have to build from the ground up. We need these Democrats to win in November," said Tenth Dems chair Lauren Beth Gash. "Many of their opponents are Tea Party Republicans. Who do you want making decisions about your county and state?"
