Activator Cycles Serves Lake Bluff Enthusiasts and Beyond
Passion for sports spurs ideas for store.
It all started with a passion for the sport.
Lake Bluff resident Nick Christofalos began riding bicycles at an early age.
"Between the ages of 11 and 25, I started out with BMX-style riding, experimenting with stingray bicycles," Christofalos said. "By the time I was 26, I started racing Motocross motorcycles cross-country. Then I was able to work my way up to expert class in Motocross racing."
Activator Cycles is the result of Christofalos' appreciation of and respect for the sport. Opening its doors July 2 of this year, Nick and his wife, Shelia, run the full-service bicycle shop.
Located in downtown Lake Bluff, Activator Cycles sells and repairs bicycles and skateboards and offers a wide selection of apparel for the avid racer or recreational rider. Activator Cycles also carries bicycles for younger people as well.
In addition to Nick and Shelia, there are two mechanics onsite: one who specializes in bicycle repair and the other in skateboard repair.
"The key to quality customer service in this industry is having a good mechanic," Christofalos said. "Our bicycle mechanic, Nate, is one of the best out there."
More often than not, when there's a new business in town that provides quality product and superior service, word travels fast. Lake Forest residents aren't the only ones who have taken notice of Activator. People are coming from Knollwood, Highland Park and even Wilmette to visit the shop.
"It's wonderful to have so many people in and outside of the community appreciate the services we provide," Christofalos said. "I also love the fact that so many local residents love riding as much as I do."
A weekly tradition deemed Thursday Night Rides, or the River Trail Ride, grew out of this mutual enjoyment between Christofalos and experienced riders in the community.
Every Thursday at 5:45 p.m., the cyclists strap on their helmets, bring their bikes and lights, and join one another at Activator Cycles. From there, the group goes for a two-hour, 30-mile cross-country bicycle ride.
"The community has been very welcoming," Christofalos said. "We like being an in-town bicycle shop that caters to families and to the racers, all for the enjoyment of riding."
