Black-Colored Pets Face Uphill Adoption Battle

Take a look at Midnight Saturn, Janey.

Black may be the choice of chic dresses and power business suits, but it is the toughest color for dogs and cats who need new homes.

Black pets seem to hide in the dark shadows of runs and cages at shelters, and the color often doesn't photograph well in adoption pictures. Some people are under the misconception that black dogs and cats are meaner and more threatening.

Not true!

Under those neon coats, which are usually glossy and shining once they're groomed and brushed, they are bright and loving pets. So take a special look at the black cats and dogs when you're looking for a new family member at your shelter or rescue group. They really need your love!

Here are several of the many black cats at Save-a-Pet in Grayslake.

This large no-kill shelter has an enormous cat room you must visit if you are looking for a feline companion. From their web site:

Midnight Saturn is a 6-year-old male. He says, "So hard for my guardian and myself. He is losing his home and as a result, we now have to go our separate ways, and mine takes me back to Save-A-Pet. When my original guardian passed away, I was living in a home with 22 cats so needless to say that we didn't always get a lot of one-on-one attention.

"On the other hand, I do great with other cats. I prefer to get petted when you are at the same level, like when you are sitting on the floor and I walk by you or if you are standing and I am on one of the cat trees or window sill. I also enjoy getting brushed and used to sometimes follow people around in order to get some attention. Hopefully I'll be able to find a relaxing home again, maybe even with another cat or two. Oh, and did I mention that I am front-paw declawed?"

Janey is a 1-year-old female. She says, "A kind lady found me outside, just as I was getting ready to have my babies. She kept us all together until everyone was old enough and took great care of us. I even got along with their small mixed breed dog. I get along well with cats too although here there are just too many of them. I am a sweet loving girl that needs a little bit of time to get adjusted to a new environment.

"Once I am comfortable, I really turn into a super affectionate and purring little girl. A little play session, time spent watching the birds or taking a nap in the sun, I am always happy...but of course nothing compares to some cuddling or relaxing in someone's lap."
