Cardinal George Says Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Against The Common Good', Do You Agree?
Cardinal Francis George releases a strongly worded letter as the State Legislature moves closer to a vote on gay marriage.
As gay marriage moves closer to a vote in the Illinois General Assembly, Cardinal Francis George has released a letter attacking the notion of same-sex marriage itself and urging Catholics to voice their objections.
A vote could happen in the Senate as soon as today as lawmakers look to pass the legislation during the lame duck session. Illinois would become the 10th state in the country to allow same-sex marriages.
In his letter, George argued that because same-sex marriages cannot be consummated and are not undertaken for the purpose of conceiving children that government, "has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible."
He qualifies his argument by writing that the Catholic church offers support for the gay community through various ministries. George argues that opposition to the potential law is crucial because of societal acceptance same-sex marriage would gain if it is viewed as legal.
"Human dignity and human rights are then reduced to the whims of political majorities," he writes.
Supporters of same-sex marriage have long argued that legalization is a human rights issue and the restriction of marriage rights to heterosexual couples is its own form of discrimination.
The law would force no religious institutions to perform same-sex marriages.
Gay marriage has been gaining support nationally at a comparatively rapid rate in recent years. Recent polls have consistently indicated that over half of Americans support it. That number spikes to 72 percent of Americans between 18 and 29 years of age, according to a CBS News poll.

absolutely correct. Same sex marriage is awfully odd and against common sense and natural order of life. Those who advocate this anormaly need to go leave in a different planet, because same sex mates never brought these loons and advocates into existence. If that is their choice, they should engage in it quietly in shame and disgust for their quire lifestyle of deviance. This same sex stunt is unsustainable because of its crudely raw.and animalistic instincts.

The "against nature" argument is simply invalid. Homosexuality has been documented in over 2,500 animal species. It would appear that homosexuality is rather common. Also, the fact that our planet is becoming overpopulated is completely unsustainable. Homosexuality is one of the most sustainable population control measures ever.

Perhaps John G. needs to realize that diversity is inevitable in a society consisting of more than one person. Is it just individuals who identify as GLBTQ that should have to go live on other planets or should we extend this to include anyone other than John himself?
It's time for John (and George) to realize that sexual relations, gender identification, etc. do not define a person. Identifying as GLBTQ is like saying you have red hair, enjoy reading, have caramel-colored skin., green eyes, are Catholic, etc. It's one characteristic that contributes to a person's identity. Although others may choose or be destined for different paths than our own, we must coincide in this one world. Although it would be easiest to send John to another planet rather than all the gays, I say we embrace his limited and out dated views and let him stay on Earth to witness homosexual love shared publicly without any shame or disgust.

@ Gianni Law - it's interesting how you correlate being gay with being liberal (and most likely democrat). There are plenty of republicans/conservatives out there who identify as GLBTQ. One "liberal" view or opinion does not make a person liberal. May the veterans you refer to rest in peace. Perhaps by embracing others and eliminating hate and fear we can one day live in a world that doesn't require violence to solve disputes (forever an idealist I know). Until then, lets remind Gianni to bless the fallen WWII veterans who identified as GLBTQ as it is not something new.

As the leader of Chicago Catholics, Cardinal George has a duty to tell his followers what being a good Catholic means. But that is not what he's doing. What he's doing is instructing Catholics to pressure legislators, and pressuring them himself, joined by like-minded clerics, to craft laws that force non-Catholics to follow Catholic doctrine.
That makes it everybody’s business. It is the right (duty?) of non-Catholics to resist religious notions being imposed on Illinoisans through law.

In order to keep their tax-exempt status, religions are supposed to refrain from involvement in politics and legislation. Sounds like there are several religions that should start paying taxes! Further, marriage is often touted by social scientist and conservatives as the glue that holds society together. So why forbid anyone from getting married? OR, to paraphrase Mark Twain ( I think!), let everyone get married so that we can all be miserable together!

Too funny. After the "sins" the Catholic Church have demonstrated... hypocrisy, misogyny, and remember that war when the pope turned a blind eye on the holocaust? Then there's child molestation, cover-ups, still no equality for women (god forbid?)... and this is based on a changing story about virgin births and water walking. But if that's your moral authority, go ahead, I won't stop you. I'll question your sanity but I won't stand in your way. You may not stand in the way of my LGBTQ brothers and sisters either. While many straights are forgoing marriage and children, the gays have yet to learn to be careful what you wish for. I suppose they want it for insurance, banking and estate purposes. Otherwise common law would suffice. Passing a llaw is necessary only because of other laws passed previously. Sort of the law of unintended consequences. I doubt that this whole issue has little to do with love, social stability or all of that stuff. This is about money, like most other issues.

The Tax Free status of the Catholic Church should be reviewed since the Cardinal is preaching political positions. Also, natural order? His stance is basically that there should also be a fertility test before a straight couple can get married. If they are unable to bear children, they can't get married. Adoption? His position does not consider that either.

There have been many good points made in many comments above. The issue is very simple. Most people. even many Priests either do not know what the Church teaches or they are afraid to stand up for their beliefs. The Church does teach, that NOBODY has a right to tell anyone who too love. God is Love, we are created by Love, to Love and be loved. However, there are two requirements for sex to be ordered morally. 1, sex needs to be mutually satisfactory. 2, it needs to be open to procreation. Ergo, sex is only morally ordered in a marraige between a woman and a man. Even if they cannot have children, it is still ordered as it is open for both requirements. According to the teachings of the Church, premarital sex is wrong for the very same reason as gay sex. I am not against legal union where gay people in a committed relationship have the same legal rights. I do however agree with the Church. That marraige is NOT to be redefined. The Church loves gay people as much as hetero people.
Jim
8:59 am on Friday, January 4, 2013
Very few understand the natural law upon which the church's moral teachings are based. It matters not because the natural law operates regardless of belief or understanding. Contravening natural law eventually leads to trouble and then men step in with "laws" trying to fix what cannot be fixed. Does anyone really think that legalizing gay same sex marriage will somehow void natural law? As I said in another post, the legal thing is about money. All of the other stuff is smoke to get the law passed.

If it was true that the church loved gay people as much as heterosexual people there wouldn't be this discussion. Gay people wouldn't be afraid to come out to family, friends and employers. If your're gay you understand what I'm saying. If your straight you have never felt the pain of rejection from family and friends. There is a reason why the suicide rate is much higher with gay youth.

John Kerr, sex goes hand and hand with marraige. You cannot seperate the two. As for as natural law is concerned, just because there are many other species that are are gay, does not have anything to do with what we are talking about. Taking religion out of this, natural law dictates that sex is made for love and procreation. All we need to do is look at the physical make up of all beings, especially those made in the image and likeness of God. As far as seperation of Church and State is involved, all we need to do is look around at this world... Our own city and State. Once God is removed, and it does not have to be my God, but once God is removed from even the Pledge of Allegience, look what we are left with. In the past 6 months, there were over 300 killed in Chicago. In Iraq there were roughly 225. The pension fund is under by almost 80B. We have the strictest gun control laws. If you ask me, and nobody did, but I will comment on it anyway, we NEED to bring God back into schools. Also, if the Church did not lobby, and was such a part of fighting Civil Rights, there would still be different drinking fountains for different colors...I know I addressed a few different issues here, and was a bit all over the place, but the point is we NEED God back into our schools, and Government.

RB, It does not matter if a couple can have children. The fact remains that they are open to it. In order for something to be true, there can be no contradictions. Major premis, minor premis, conclusion. Here is a good example.. I think we can all agree that ALL human life has the right to life, right?(minor premis). A fetus(zygote) is a human being at the lowest stages of actualization, it is not a dog, a cat, or a flower, but a human life at the beginging stages of life(major premis). Therefore, a fetus has the right to life(conclusion). Just thought I would open another can of worms...

Gays can already marry in Illinois. Don't believe me? How about if a Gay Man marries a Lesbian Woman? If Illinois prevents a gay guy from marrying another, it would be prejudicial and against the principle of equality under the law. Preventing a 'same sex' person from marrying another is also prejudicial since the reason cited is that the couple could not conceive. Oh heavenly father, Cardinal George, numerous opposite sex couples cannot conceive also, should their marriages be extinguished? George, where was your God when a nutcase shot 20 children a few weeks ago, was he overwhelmed with worry about gays marrying each other? I agree that there is and should be gay union. I do not agree that we redifine marraige, at all. The Church in fact does love gay people. Again, the Church teaches that nobody or institution has the right to tell anyone who to love. But there are things that are right and wrong. One of the major problems in this Country is the GREAT lack of morality. If we say that whatever you do is ok as long as it does not hurt me is not making a moral choice. Therefore, it is the same as making a wrong choice. The Catholic Church has done a lot of the gay community. But to approve of something that does not follow the requirements for sex to be right, or ordered towards the good, is in fact wrong. Too say because the Church does not approve of sex outside of marraige, which is wrong for the same reason gay sex is, is the cause of suicide is wrong. The Church is not responsible for the incredible tragedy of young gay teenagers committing suicide. In fact the opposite is true, the Church is trying to prevent that from happening. This Country is in such a mess because we do not stand up anymore and make moral choices. The only absolute truth that many people beleive is that there are no absolute truths. That is sad. People wonder why there is such evil in this world. With the focus on the human soul, not what we do, or what we have, but who we are, we can begin to stop evil from running rampant in our families, and communities. We need to stand up to evil, by making ordered, moral choices.
IMHO

The Church is not trying to control weak minded people. That insulting and riduclous comment is so full of logical fallacy it is almost entertaining. Where was God during the killing of innocent youth in Conn.? God had nothing to do with that. We were created in His image and likeness, which means we have the ability to know and see things as they are, we can judge things to be what they are. Also, we have free will. When God, not religion, but GOD, is taken out of school, and emphasis is placed on what you have or do as opposed to our essence, our souls, then we live in a world full of evil...Turn on the news, open a news paper, we see proof everyday, all day. The Church does more for the poor then ANY institution in the world by the way. That is factual. We do need more Love in this world. Love with a capital L. Love with a capital L is another term for God. Things will not change in this Country if we do not bring God back into our lives. It is good you turned out good without beleiving in God as you say. But you know a tree by its fruit. Not by how big it is. Your God does not have to be mine. Religious institutions need to be reformed. To bring God back into them. But real beleivers and leaders have the right and obligation to teach this society to make moral decisions. To live moral lives. JC., what makes you a free thinker and not me, or anyone else on here? What is it that differentiates you as a free thinker as say, me? Would like to hear that logical answer?
J C
11:57 am on Friday, January 4, 2013
To speak of logic , One must first understand it and it's link with reality ,
Now how can you refer to a supernatural being that lives beyond the laws of the physical universe. And ask for logic? Now that is amusing because the first thing you ask for is to throw logic and reason out the window. Now you are speaking of magic and superstition . As I thought you did not answer my question. I bet you voted Dem....LOL. Really though, I didnt think you would answer. I never mentioned the bible. I repeatedly said, my God does not have to be yours. I never mentioned scripture at all. I defend what Cardinal George and the Church has the right and obligation to do.Personally I think many of the Church hierarchy are criminals for obstructing justice. But mostly spoke in spiritual and philosophical terms. So again, what makes you a free thinker and not me?? Or anyone that disagrees with you. Interesting!!!

I can't think. Food tastes weird. I'm not free. I'm stuck in Wisconsin. Why did God let me come here? I can't figure out how to leave without a car. I would walk to Chicago. Which is 5 hours driving. But in the north woods of Wisconsin we have wild life. Bob cats, coyotes, wolves, deer could be dangerous if you get too close. Bear, cubs, crows, angry birds, predators. I swear I want to walk to Chicago. Maybe not. Maybe it's all a lie about the north woods. I did see a panther, and a wolf. While driving nearby. A wasp landed on my finger and tickled me once. Is it too dangerous to walk home? I would leave everything here. I might walk out soon. I need a route to highway 73. From old 8 road in prentice Wi. I can figure it all out when I get some where familiar.

Well said Jim. Faith is a gift that is freely given, but also must be freely received. Philisophically speaking, Socrates built on what Plato wrote. Aristotle took that further by writing that every action has an end, that end is either towards the good or towards evil. Aquinas took it a step further by writing of the good and made it God. As he wrote to the philisophical proof for the existence of the Unmoved Mover, which he called God, all our actions are now directed towards the good which is God. Everything we do is directed towards God or evil. Also, because we live in community, my actions have a ripple effect that affect your lives. And vice versa. We take God out of our intitutions, however you define Him, out of the picture this is what we wind up with, a world full of selfish, evil world. Our children are being slaughtered in there schools. I am grateful I accepted the gift of Faith. I also see how people can live good and moral lives based on a set of virtues not values, but virtues. Values are subjective. Virtues are true, for everyone all the time. Again, I have loved ones that are gay, i do not feel any different about them then I do hetro people. I also agree with gay union. I want my cousin to be able to have the same legal rights with his lover as we have. However, I absolutly dissagree with changing the definition on marriage. Civilly or Morally. We need to bring Morality back.. We need to bring choice back Choice based on things that are absolutly true.

Matt,
Unfortunately there are many who do not struggle with philosophy and/or moral theology. Ask someone if it can be raining and not raining at the same place and the same time and many will say yes. Best in that case to move on to another conversation. So many have a closed mind to anything except what "feels" good and unfortunatel a lot of that is centered in their genitals. Remember, no rules, just rights. Seems to me The United States is becoming atower of Babel. By the time it comes down in chaos, no one will know why and it will be too late.

50% of marriages end in divorce. Bring morality back? So, you're saying that preventing a committed couple from marrying is bringing morality back? Seems to me this moral 'majority' should take a look at their own house before they prevent someone from getting married. Catholic doctrine should have nothing to do with civil law. If a Catholic Church wants to opt out of marrying a gay couple they can do so. They already bend the rules so many times to marry straight couples who 'annul' a 20 year marriage so they can say they didn't get a divorce and thus remain active in the church. Talk about hypocritical!

My Church welcomes Gays and Gays are very active contributing members in Church. It's a personal choice and not as a broad statement that "gays dont care whether they are accepted by the church". Many Gays believe in God and worship, many don't. Kind of like society in general. Some churches don't welcome Gays. Regardless, any Church should not control civil law. Separation of church and state.

That is right...The Church does need reform. Carol is right, and I think it is something we all agree. My cousin and his lover are both Catholic. They do not care if they are married in the Church. Like I said a few times above, I am for all gays having the same legal rights as hetero's. But NOT redefining marriage. What does divorce and the other stuff have to do with making this world a better place. By acknowledging the fact there are absolute truths we all need to adhere too and live moral lives based on the human soul being the focus of this world and not what the human does, or is or has which is where the focus is now.

Why anyone would care what a Cardinal, or anyone who has risen to a level of authority in the Catholic Church as it exists today, has to say is beyond me. This institution has about as much to do with the teachings of Jesus as our mass media has with critical thinking. If pedophilia and outright suppression of women (nuns do most of the good work in the name of the Church, but their struggle for equality is continually rebuked by these outrageously pompous and entitled men in robes) weren't enough to make people walk away, then what hope is there of seeing them give their "blessing" to gay people who wish to marry? Get over it people. Walk away from this psychopath-infested institution. Jesus isn't there. He's in you...and he'll cheer you on when you make the break.

What two consenting adults do behind closed doors is their biz. Frankly I don't want to know or constantly hear about it: hetero or homo. We are entitled to religious freedom. Catholic doctrine not only compells but requires the Cardinal and all Catholics to prosletize. Yes many Catholics don't agree w/ the Cardinal/ and doctrine. However, it is doctrine based on the common fact that the propagation of our human species depends on the joining of a man and woman. Statically, the best outcome arises from them being in a committed relationship as defined by the covenant of marriage. While there are instances of homosexuality in the animal world, we are not animals! We have reason- common sense that places us at the top of the food chain for our ultimate survival. We enjoy great freedom in the USA which enables us to love whom we choose even if it defies the common sense of natural law or religious doctrine. Do we really want govt meddling any further w/ either?

The idea is not a Reilgious arguement. We can certainly go into a religious argument. But in order for us to do it we need to base it on fact, not opinions. The fact is the Church does NOT subjugate women. According to the Catholic Church women are just as important as men. They do however say that there are differences between men and women, equal, but different. Therefore men and women have different roles. One is not more important then the other. Some would argue that the woman's role in the Church is more important then the men. There is also NO doubt that the leaders of the Church have made EVIL decisions through the 2013 yr history of the Church. That does not negate the Truth of what She teaches. It is the Sacraments that keep me Catholic. Not the Holy Father, or Priests or Nuns. Faith and reason go hand and hand. Unfortunately for some, faith and reason are not dead. No matter what I think of the Cardinal, I see where he as an obligation to stand up and lobby for what the Church teaches. Also, if the Church did not like gay people, we would have a lot less Cardinals, Priests and Nuns. The interesting thing so far to me in these posts, is that most do not talk about their opinions being backed by fact. Most of the responses to my posts have not been based in logic or reasonable arguments. Just opinions. None of the questions I asked of others have been answers directly. I do not care if people disagree with me, as long as they have facts to back what they say.

Just for the record. I believe gay men and women should have a legal union to have the same legal rights as my wife and I do. I do not believe that we should change the definition of marriage. Marriage is between a man and a woman. There is a difference there. So, again, none of the questions I asked were answered directly, so what logical facts would you like to discuss?
Millie

The Cardinal may be correct about the common good. Time will tell. My guess is that "marriage" like "education" will be dumbed down and that folks who don't want to be included inh that melting pot will find a new way to form a union perhaps with a new definition and new laws to govern the financial and other legal issues. Something like 46% of all births are out of wedlock presently.
I am fascinated by some of the veiled anti-religious tone of some posts. Hard to tell if they are anti God or just ant-religious. But who can name a human orgainization free of stupidity or corruption or evil or all three. For those who are not determinists, I can only say that without evil there would be no free will. Without free will there would be no God. Of course some would say that a television does indeed show signs of intelligent design but that the universe does not.
Matt
12:12 pm on Saturday, January 5, 2013
Well said Jim. If we ask a direct question we do not get a direct response. So how can we have an actual logical discussion. For something to be true, there cannot be any contradictions. Major premise, Minor premise, and conclusion must all follow each other. If we cannot have a logical discussion then everything comes down to what you said earlier, :if it feels good, do it".
