Carmel Captures 3rd Straight State Gymnastics Title

Stevenson, Prairie Ridge, Fremd, Lake Forest round out top five.

The Final Score: 1. Carmel 151.175; 2. Stevenson 149.175; 3. Prairie Ridge 148.175; 4. Fremd 146.65; 5. Lake Forest 144.50; 6. Lyons 144.475; 7. Glenbard North 143.55; 8. New Trier 141.775

Top Performer: DeKalb’s Alyssa Lopez scored a 38.45 to edge Carmel’s Kristin Mirski, who finished with a 38.40, and win the state all-around title.

Other Notable Performances: Carmel’s Sarah Cohen-Smith captured the vault with a 9.875; Glenbard North’s Amanda Quinn and Lyons’ Kelsy Kurfirst tied for first on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.60; Carmel’s Laura Feely won the balance beam with a 9.575, and Lopez and Mirski tied for first in floor exercise with a 9.7.

The Bottom Line: Carmel collected its third consecutive state title. Stevenson took second led by Ali Castriano, who was fourth in the all-around with a 38.05. Prairie Ridge set a school record and won its first state trophy with its third-place finish. The Wolves were led by freshman Rachael Underwood, who was third in the all-around with a 38.10, Riley Mahoney, who was sixth in the all-around with a 37.75 and Nikki Novak. Fremd, which was making its 20th consecutive trip to the state finals, snared fourth. Shannon Lemajuer and Sydney Plichta, who was a finalist in two individual events, paced the Vikings. Lake Forest, which claimed second in the state last year, finished fifth this year behind Kylie Carlson, who was tied for seventh in the all-around and Katherine Mckeon, who finished 13th. New Trier, which made its first state appearance since 1995, received strong performances from Kerry Scafidi, Elana Benishay and Samantha Stoddart.
