A Lake Forest High School student has been identified after being fatally struck by a tree Monday while camping in the Teton Wilderness in Wyoming, according to an article posted by the Chicago Tribune,
Elizabeth Burns, 16, was among a dozen teens who was helping to set up camp about four miles east of the Turpin Meadow trailhead, according to the article.
A 75-foot tree toppled over and killed Burns, who was kneeling down about 66 feet away from the tree's base.
Burns, who would have been a junior this fall at LFHS, is the daughter of Michael and Sally Burns. Michael served a term as Third Ward alderman, and is currently the president of the Lake Forest Housing Trust Board.
Lake Forest High School District 115 has reached out to CROYA and local churches to offer teens an opportunity for grief counseling, according to Anne Whipple, director of communications for the district.
