Illinois Republicans Feeling Good About the Future

While November's elections are important, GOP leaders gathered at Republican National Convention say they're focused on strengthening the party for the long term.

TAMPA, FL -- With President Barack Obama carrying Illinois by 25 percentage points in 2008 and with a new poll showing him leading Mitt Romney by about the same margin, one might think there's not much joy among delegates and party leaders gathered here for the Republican National Convention this week.

And while even the reddest of the Republicans acknowledges that GOP presidential candidate Romney has little chance of carrying Illinois, those in Tampa stress that they're focused on building the party for 2014 and beyond.

"The presidential race will be an uphill climb for us," said state party Chairman Pat Brady, adding that Republicans are concentrating their efforts more on congressional and state legislative races this fall.

"In 2014, we’re going to take control of the state, and in 2016, we’re going to be a swing state (in the presidential race)," Brady said. "2012 is an important year, particularly for congressional races, but it’s part of a longer term plan to get more Republicans in office because we need to save our state."

GOP leaders see surge in engagement

Changing Illinois turn from a blue state to a red one — or even a purple one — by the next presidential election will be a challenge in a state where the governor's office and both houses of the General Assembly are controlled by Democrats.

But party leaders say they're seeing more engagement and excitement among Republicans than they have in years — and that should lead to success at the ballot box, they say.

"I’ve been to a number of conventions and I’ve never seen the Republican Party so unified since the Reagan days," said state Sen. Kirk Dillard, who represents DuPage County. "I think the Republican Party’s future in Illinois is bright. For the sake of the citizens of this state, we need a two-party state, with Republicans in control of Springfield, to get our fiscal house in order."

"I think there is a lot of enthusiasm like we haven’t see for a long time," added Karen McConnaughay, chairman of the Kane County Board and state Senate candidate. "You can feel it, you can feel that the momentum is really building."

Pat Rea, a delegate from Tinley Park who has been active in the party for years, said he seeing more and more people wanting to get involved.

"I’ve been the committeeman in Bremen Township since the last presidential election...and I can tell you when I came in, it was difficult finding people who wanted to actively get involved. Now it's difficult to handle all the vounteers," Rea said. "Is this new? It’s new to me."

Adam Robinson, chair of the Chicago Republican Party, said since he was elected to his post in April, more than 800 GOP volunteers have come forward to work on behalf of the party in the city.

"That's new volunteers," he stressed. "Republicans want to get involved and we’re simply giving them a way to get engaged. It’s grassroots…it’s very real support."

Illinois GOP leaders say part of that engagement is a result of unhappiness over the direction of the country since Obama has taken office.

"President Obama is a magnificant speaker and he outlined during the last campaign and since some extraordinary lofty goals and ideals...and none of them have worked," Rea said.

Could Obama really lose in Illinois?

Even though the state's Republicans are focused on building the party for the long term, it doesn't mean they're giving up on this year's presidential election — at least not publicly.

In 2008, Obama took 76 percent of the vote in Cook County, more than triple what GOP challenger John McCain received. But a poll released earlier this month shows Obama leading Romney by just 49 percent to 37 percent.

And Illinios Republicans say there are many who backed Obama in 2008 who will likley be sitting on the sidelines this time around.

"What I see is an incumbent president form our hometown who overpromised and underdelivered for his people in Chicago," Robinson said. "Independent voters and base democrats in Chicago — particularly in the black communitiy — feel this president really oversold them on a bill of goods he has not delivered. Quite frankly, he has not been 'left' enough for these guys, so they just aren’t going to vote for him.

"I’m going to make any claims and say that they’re going to show up for our guy," Robinson added. "But Obama is going to have some turnout issues in the city of Chicago."

"I think a lot of people now have buyer’s remorse," said U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, whosed 13th District encompasses the southwest suburbs. "There are a lot of people who are really concerned about the slow economic growth and the lack of jobs, and I think people are really worried about where this country is going."

"It isn’t a done deal that the president’s going to win Illinois."

Bob Stock is actually a Democrat just pretending to be an independent. Conrad who commented below is also doing the same thing. The purpose of this comment is to try to paint Republicans as "extreme". "Extreme" is a word that you're going to hear a whole lot in the next few months.

The extremists occupy the White House now. Obamacare is extreme. Nancy Pelosi and Jan Schakowsky are extremists.

Isn't anything extreme if it is the far opposite what a group believes? And elections wouldn't work if independents didn't swing one way or the other every four to eight years. People certainly can identify as independents who are leaning one way or the other. They kind of have to in order to be a working part of society.

Richard- Making it harder for people to vote is extreme, tyring to force religious doctrine on a secular country is extreme, limiting peoples rights because of their sexual orientation is extreme, anti science rhetoric is extreme, trying to control a woman's body with legislation is extreme; you might not like Obamacare, you might profoundly disagree with Nancy Pelosi and Jan Schakowsky, but you clearly do not understand the definition of extreme.

The dems fight any effort to clean up voting because they know the only way to win is to lie, cheat. and steal. How is it that many dems claim to have no id but they drive to the poll (w/ drivers license in pocket) and claim they have no id so they can vote multiple times. The dems should be pushing to get these poor people id's that they need in everyday life rather than fight to keep them id'less. You can't enter federal buildings, airports, bars, check out library books, get credit cards, rent cars, and perform most other life functions without id. GET THEM ID'S. People w/o id should be at least required to ink their thumb as we required for elections in Iraq so they can only vote once on election day. But then again, Dem's would fight the color of the ink becase it would be a "racist" color!

Questions:
CK: How much was the National Debt when George W left the White House? In this debt, were the wars in Afghanistan counted? What is the National debt under Obama and the same question, are the wars on the books?

Ted: how many actual cases have been found of actual voter fraud? Considering how many should that be a priority in this state?

Do people when they register have to prove identity? Do poor people who don't drive and barely have money for food and the elderly who sometimes must choose between food and medicine be required to Pay for a new state id? They don't have cars, so they wouldn't have a drivers licence either.

But I again ask the cases of real voter fraud and your siting of facts regarding this?

Looking forward to some answers, not rhetoric.

I was a Republican until the Tea Party took over. I agree with you Mr. Stock. Until the Republicans rid themselves of the hypocrites on the far right I'll have to call myself an independent also currently in the Democrats camp. The Tea Party wants to take this country back 200 hundred something years by denying science, reversing social progress, and encompassing a theocratic hegemony. It's their way or the highway and that's not what this country is about.

When the first thing out of somebody's mouth is: "I was a Republican until the Tea Party took over.", then you know everything else that follows is b.s.

"Seminar callers" that called into Rush Limbaugh's radio show years ago were trained to say the same thing, "I was a Republican until the [insert New Gingrich or some other conservative's name] took over.". That used to happen time after time after time, but as soon as that happens, it's obvious to Rush and everybody else that the caller is a Democrat pretending to be a conservative.

Sorry Democrats, but you need to get a new playbook. The old playbook doesn't work anymore. And that's why Conrad has earned the name "Bozo".

Mr. Farkas got us off to a good start, but they cannot just parrot what he said. Please articulate YOUR detailed vision for a budget plan that will return the state to a balanced budget. Time is running out and your silence isn't doing you any favors with the moderate voters of your district. That is assuming, of course, that you HAVE a plan.

Every state and city in fiscal doodoo is controlled by Democrats. Illinois has passed the tipping point and cannot be turned around by either taxes or reasonable spending cuts. Its credit rating will not aalow for borrowing at reasonable cost and drastic tax increases which will not solve the problem will drive businesses and people away making the problem even worse. My guess is that once the state can no longer borrow money, it will lose its charter and revert to being a territory with a federalyy appointed receiver. And if and when Illinois gets its charter back, if there are any voters left, they will elect a Democrat to run the place, self destructive as they are.

Bill Brady carried 98 of 102 counties in Illinois in the election for governor in Illinois. With Obama running so poorly against Romney in Chicago and Crook County, it seems like Romney should have a good shot at carrying Illinois too.

Of course, it really depends upon how many dead people vote in Chicago/Crook County. Polling of dead people in Chicago shows that dead people overwhelmingly support Obama. The polling of dead people in Chicago also shows that many dead people plan to vote for Obama more than once.

Romney will carry Illinois, unless the Democrats steal the election.

You used a personal experience or an isolated example instead of a sound argument or compelling evidence.
It's often much easier for people to believe someone's testimony as opposed to understanding complex data and variation across a continuum. Quantitative scientific measures are almost always more accurate than personal perceptions and experiences, but our inclination is to believe that which is tangible to us, and/or the word of someone we trust over a more 'abstract' statistical reality.
Example: Jason said that that was all cool and everything, but his grandfather smoked, like, 30 cigarettes a day and lived until 97 - so don't believe everything you read about meta analyses of methodologically sound studies showing proven causal relationships.

His statement made no mention of the scandal unleashed in an anonymous, undated letter sent several weeks ago to the Pinal County Recorder's Office. has anyone noticed that all areas mentioned are in democratic control. I have lived in this state my whole life and if I could get out of my house and sell I would and take my business to all other states other than NJ, CA, NY, MA or MD. But who is going to buy my house with my real estate taxes soooo high BECAUSE OUR TEACHERS KEEP GETTING COLLECTIVE BARGAINED RAISES BECAUSE THEY NEED COST OF LIVING INCREASES while us taxpayers are taking pay cuts and many are losing their jobs and homes.. We have a democratic state that has so much corruption, politicians like Madigan and the other croooks taking money from the teachers unions and seiu to keep this vicious loop going. There was an article in this very paper that stated if we do not cap our real estate taxes before the democrooks put it in to the district schools hands, you will see a generation gap of home ownership because the crooked school boards loaded with ex-teachers, administrators and union people will just continue to award more higher pensions, salaries etc etc. My real estate taxes are high now, imagine if you give the school disitricts control?

Again, only loony tune liberals are against a common sense rule that would help prevent people from busing in people in white vans asking for dead people or Acorn registered false people's ballots. From Slate
those who suspect rampant fraud sometimes admit they are just relying on their gut; it simply feels like it exists. Of course, we’ve all heard the stories of dead voters in Chicago or suitcases of absentee ballots in the Deep South. Conservatives capitalize on these familiar chestnuts to make the case for restrictive new measures, often parading these old stories as modern facts. For example, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson went on Fox News earlier this year to declare that “we know for a fact there are deceased people whose identities are being used in elections in South Carolina.” Conservative outlets parroted the story endlessly, yet after a state investigation turned up zero evidence of fraud, they have gone silent.

FROM US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT:

Twelve thousand noncitizens registered to vote in Colorado; apparently 5,000 of those voted in 2010. A recent report in North Carolina by James O'Keefe's Project Veritas (of ACORN-undercover expose` fame) compared records of registered voters to prospective jurors disqualified due to noncitizenship, but who then voted in North Carolina in 2010. The State of Florida is suing the Department of Homeland Security to obtain a list of noncitizens in order to purge the state's voter rolls before the 2012 election, and was just sued in return by the Barack Obama-Eric Holder Department of Justice with a lawsuit for purging its rolls, which is required by federal law.

Despite the steady reports of election fraud cases, updated regularly on the Republican National Lawyers Association "Vote Fraud Map," there persists a left-wing, Democratic Party-led drumbeat of "vote fraud deniers," who ignore the cases and complain loudly that there is no vote fraud.

"However, a special prosecutor assigned to the case brought charges against 650 people, which did not result in convictions.[21] Three Chicago election workers were convicted of voter fraud in 1962 and served short terms in jail.[21] Mazo, the Herald-Tribune reporter, later said that he found names of the dead who had voted in Chicago, along with 56 people from one house.[21] He found cases of Republican voter fraud in southern Illinois, but said the totals didn't match the Chicago fraud he found.[21] After Mazo had published four parts of an intended 12-part voter fraud series documenting his findings which was re-published nationally, he says Nixon requested his publisher stop the rest of the series so as to prevent a constitutional crisis.[21] Nevertheless, the Chicago Tribune wrote that "the election of November 8 was characterized by such gross and palpable fraud as to justify the conclusion that [Nixon] was deprived of victory."[21] Had Nixon won both states, he would have ended up with exactly 270 electoral votes and the presidency, with or without a victory in the popular vote."

I'd be willing to bet that in our nation of roughly 312,000,000, there has never been an election where all the votes, both sides, has been fair and square. If you google GOP voter fraud, there are plenty of cases of that as well.

We always hear that some Democrats have trouble getting ID's so requiring ID's to vote hurts Dems. Question: if Dems dont have ID's-how do they cash their welfare checks and get food stamps? Seriously-the Dem argument against voter ID is an argument for vote fraud which benefits DEMS in places like Chicago (Rahm values.) By the way maybe Rahm should worry about the school strike and murder rates and not Chick-Fil-A. The Eastwood bit at the convention was very subtle improv-but remember we cannot mock THE ONE!

Your presumption that only folks on welfare or the food stamp program is myopic and incorrect. The plain facts are, most people without photo ID are either in an area where it is difficult to get to a place to acquire one, or the "rules" set to obtain one are difficult.
You should feel fortunate that you are in a position to obtain the ID, however, the larger topic is the "targeting" done by the Republican party to create blockades against those who are known not to vote for them. The number of "actual" cases of "in person" voter fraud occurred is virtually non-existant and this is subtantiated by the Republicans themselves.
Try looking beyond Chicago for your perspective, and even if you cannot, rather than rant about your feelings why don't you jump in and take an active role?

Yes, anyone who disagrees with Bob Stock is an idealogue. The purpose of my posts is to correct disinformation from the left (propaganda) and to educate. I have no interest in discussion with progressives (marxists)-that would be a waste of time. Progressives have nothing rational to offer. We are merely planting the seed of common sense in people's mind so that one day the seed will sprout and others will emerge from the darkness of liberal/progressive (marxist) thought and finally see the light of common sense.

Mr. Citron, let me say this once again, because apparently you didn't get it the first time. We have no interest in having a conversation with irrational people, that is liberals/progressives (marxists).

Some people only get information on politics from Saturday Night Live. I stopped watching SNL in 1981 ("Jane, you ignorant slut."). SNL ceased to be funny 20 years ago.

With respect to Sarah Palin, we have immense respect for her. She not only opposes abortion, but when it came to her own life, she chose to bring Trig Palin into the world, even though Trig was disabled. My favorite candidate for the presidency in 2012 was Sarah Palin, but I'll vote for Mitt Romney just to get rid of the "national nightmare" that was elected in 2008.

We respect Michele Bachmann too. Congresswoman Bachmann is a first class American.

you got nothing just like Obama.........but here I do it for you.

Journalism: If media "fact checkers" are just impartial guardians of the truth, how come they got their own facts wrong about Paul Ryan's speech, and did so in a way that helped President Obama's re-election effort?

Case in point was the rush of "fact check" stories claiming Ryan misled when he talked about a shuttered auto plant in his home state.

Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler posted a piece — "Ryan misleads on GM plant closing in hometown" — saying Ryan "appeared to suggest" that Obama was responsible for the closure of a GM plant in Janesville, Wis.

"That's not true," Kessler said. "The plant was closed in December 2008, before Obama was sworn in."

What's not true are Kessler's "facts." Ryan didn't suggest Obama was responsible for shuttering the plant. Instead, he correctly noted that Obama promised during the campaign that the troubled plant "will be here for another hundred years" if his policies were enacted.

Also, the plant didn't close in December 2008. It was still producing cars until April 2009.

"The stimulus was a case of political patronage, corporate welfare and cronyism at their worst.
Fact: Ryan asked for a piece of the stimulus money for two Wisconsin energy conservation companies.
Ryan attacked Obamacare:
"The coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama."
Ryan incorporated the same cuts into budgets as chairman of its Budget Committee, using the money for deficit reduction.
Fact: Ryan’s plan for the elderly would make seniors pay more.
Ryan blamed Obama for America’s downgrade when it came to the country's credit rating: “It began with a perfect Triple-A credit rating for the United States; it ends with a downgraded America.”
The Fact: Standards and Poor (S&P) attributed the downgrade to the debt ceiling debacle led by Ryan. Here’s what S&P said during the downgrade:
“We lowered our long-term rating on the U.S. because we believe that the prolonged controversy over raising the statutory debt ceiling and the related fiscal policy debate indicate that further near-term progress containing the growth in public spending, especially on entitlements, or on reaching an agreement on raising revenues is less likely than we previously assumed and will remain a contentious and fitful process."

The not closing of Gitmo, the continuation of the police state from Homeland Security, the Wall Street welfare. Those are the things that count, not the piddlely dunk things the campaign focuses on in order to enrage their voters. They focus on the voters hatred of the opposition instead of the facts.

What should anger you is the lack of leadership.......that's is the biggest lie.

Bill Clinton was able to work with Newt and compromise on a whole host of things to make America better. So it can be done.

Once again I just cant get past the fact the US has not passed a budget in 3 years to me that's totally unacceptable and the pinnacle of poor leadership and the inability to work with others.

The Fiscal Cliff is part 2........how can anyone hire anyone with that hanging over a businesses head. We have no idea what our tax rates will be. You want companies to hire......well they do Budgets. And a Budget has a tax rate in it.

These things are outrageous and how Democrats can still support Obama is unbelievable. This is why I say "sheep"

Let's talk about what's really important here-jobs, jobs, jobs. What has Obama done to fix the economy and get Americans back to work?

Obama cancelled the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline so his campaign contributor, Warren Buffet, could make money on hauling oil from Canada by rail, instead of by the pipeline. (Buffet owns a big share of the railroad which benefitted from the cancellation of the KXL pipeline.)

"It's the economy stupid."

It's funny how people will bicker here, and then be compelety appalled by Congress's inability to work together. If we can't even communicate on a local level, how can we expect our nation to work together and solve major issues? It's time to stop limiting ourselves to the views of one party. Wouldn't it be better to take a little bit from each side to create the most comprehensive and well-rounded policy? If you reject everything another party says, be it democratic or republican, how can you expect the other side not to do the same? Compromise isn't a loss.

I am a Libertarian. So for me Freedom and Fiscal responsibility are the most important things.

But like McCloud says it impossible to compromise with Obama and the Democrats. They want unchecked spending, hence no budget even thought the house has passed one every year and Harry Reid does not even allow a vote on it in the Senate. Obamacare no compromise there. We cant continue to have zero fiscal forecasts, no tax policy, and 1 trillion dollar deficits.

This is an easy choice for once. Mitt has amazing experience (both government and business) and commitment, proven track record of compromise, and Ryan has the energy and will to see the job done. Vs a President who promised to finish his Senate seat for IL (which I voted for him), does not spend any time focusing on the important issues, divides America every chance he get, and a VP that cant even find the White House.

This is a no brain-er folks. I mean this is not McCain/Palin we are talking about.

James Henry: "Compromise isn't a loss."

How do you compromise with bad public policy? How do you compromise with corruption? How do you compromise with stupidity? Should people with intergrity compromise with crooks just for the sake of compromise?

Chamberlain compromised with Hitler and achieved "peace in our time". That compromise cost 60 million people their lives.

There is a time for compromise and there is a time for standing on your principles. This is not a time for compromise. This is a time to smash the corruption brought to us by Democrats.

In 2008, Obama and the Democrats won the election. Did the Democrats compromise after the election? Hell no. Obama said "We won." Obama also said that we could come along for the ride but we had to sit in the back seat and not do too much talking.

In 2010, the Republicans defeated the Democrats in a landslide. All of a sudden, the Democrats want to compromise. In 2012, Governor Walker cleaned the Democrats' clock in Wisconsin and Romney/Ryan are going to kick the Democrats' rear ends up and down the street in about 60 days. Once again, we hear about compromise.

To borrow a phrase from Clint Eastwood-Democrats can do the impossible to themselves. We want our country back. And, oh by the way, we're taking Illinois back and we're working on taking back Crook County from the crooks too.

We have a dream-imagine a Republican mayor in Chicago and Mayor Rahm shining shoes on State Street.

If you are interested in following the story of Obama a little more, then compare photographs of the face of Barack Obama with the face of his supposed father, Barack Obama, and the face of Frank Marshall Davis. Barack Obama looks nothing like Barack Obama Sr., but bears a striking resemblance to Frank Marshall Davis.

Frank Marshall Davis was a member of Communist Party USA. When you start looking into Davis, you start to find all sorts of interesting things, such as nude photographs of Obama's mother taken by Davis

Perhaps the reason why Obama's birth certificate was hidden and/or falsified is that Obama doesn't want anyone to know that his father was a member of the Communist Party. We know that Obama belonged to a marxist student organization while he attended Occidental College.

We also know that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) purchased 1.5 billion rounds of hollow-point ammunition recently. Why would DHS purchase that much ammunition and why would it be hollow-point ammunition? What is the use for all that ammunition-5 rounds per every man, woman and child in the US.

There is no doubt that President Obama is a marxist. What the DHS ammunition is for, I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem difficult to figure out what's it's for.

A judge in north Texas thinks that civil war will break out over the results of the election if Obama is re-elected. It is my opinion that violence is going to break out regardless of wins the election.

Illinois needs new leadership and it should start at the local level. 9th Senate District
candidate Glenn Farkas, a business owner from Glenview, has the leadership skills and business sense to help install fiscal discipline to the serious financial morass which Illinois is facing. He offers a stark contrast to his opponent, Daniel Biss, a former math academic, who firmly supports a Progressive Illinois Income Tax, on top of the recent state income tax increase, and is a leading proponent of cost-shifting of pension liabilities to beleaguered school districts which will significantly increase our property taxes. Mr. Farkas has publicly stated that he will not take any Illinois pension dollars when elected- a refreshing statement which should demonstrate to his constituents of the 9th District ( partial NBK, Glenview Glencoe, Wilmette, Northfield, majority of Evanston, Kenilworth, Winnetka) just how serious he is about fixing pension reform. It is not calculus; it is about taking back Illinois for the taxpayers. If we care about the future of Illinois, we can start local.

Ms. Singer, I couldn't agree with you more about being an educated voter! That is why many constituents, including myself, in the 9th District attended Mr. Biss's recent political meetings in Glenview & Skokie. If you were at the meetings, you heard him, yourself, (1) support a Progressive Illinois Income tax (twice), (2) support pension liability cost-shifting to school districts which will affect property taxes and (3) describe all Springfield legislators as "liars". These are facts. Many of us found his points incredulous; and, the way he he handled the the Wilmette business owner's question just rude. He may address some of your questions and concerns, and may be a nice guy, but his verbally stated positions on many IL pocketbook and taxpayer issues is something I, and many taxpayers in the 9th District, find fiscally irresponsible; and his pension cost shifting position will cause further financial distress to our local School Districts. I am glad that he has a worthy opponent in Glenn Farkas; an MBA, and local small business owner with private sector Pension experience. I am guessing that you will be at the upcoming debate and very much respect your difference of opinion which gives further proof that all politics are "local". I wish more of the constituents, in our great 9th District, would as concerned about the upcoming local election as you and I are- maybe then we could fix the
the terrible financial morass that our state is facing.
