Lake Forest Awarded $1.2 Million for Train Station Renovations
The Illinois Transportation Highway Authority has awarded the City of Lake Forest grant funds to complete renovations at the east side train station.
The City of Lake Forest is pleased to announce that it has received $1,236,520 in funding from the Illinois Transportation Highway Authority (ITEP) to complete the remainder of Phase I and Phase II of the East Side Train Station Renovation, a $3 million project.
The 1899 train station in historic Market Square is requiring rehabilitation to better serve nearly 1,000 daily Metra commuters as well as ensure the station’s historic integrity. In the late 1970s, the station was scheduled for demolition but was saved by private donations.
The city has been working to secure grant funding for this project since 2005. In 2009, the city and the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation partnered to apply for an ITEP grant, which resulted in securing $835,090.
Along with $160,000 from the city’s capital improvement program and Metra’s donation of $250,000, the funds allowed for preliminary improvements including roof restoration consistent with the original design of the station to include slate, restoration of dormers and hipped roof elements, and removal of the roof overhang on the station and gable on the west building.
The recent ITEP grant will fund the completion of Phase II of the project, which includes interior restoration: including upgrading and replacing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression systems and carpentry.
The building’s woodwork, plaster and foundation have suffered significant water damage and the restrooms do not satisfy ADA standards and commuter traffic volume. In addition to functioning as an active Metra station, the building, site and adjacent regional bicycle trail are also the focal point and gathering place for many community events.
"This has been a long-time collaboration of efforts between the preservation foundation and the city. The restoration of the train station will make Market Square complete," said Assistant City Manager Carina Walters.

This is a joke and shows whats wrong with our state. The station doesn't need any money. It's perfectly fine. 1.5 million of taxpayer money is ridiculous.
