Memorial Services To Commemorate Sept. 11 Anniversary

Communities throughout the north and northwest suburbs will be honoring the lives lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with commemorative ceremonies.

Patch has compiled a list of events happening in the area.

Lake Forest, Lake Bluff
Lake Forest Police and Fire Departments will conduct a special remembrance ceremony from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Market Square on Western Avenue off of Deerpath.

Grace United Methodist Church, 244 E. Scranton Ave., Lake Bluff, will host a service to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9-11 at 10 a.m. Sunday. Members of the Lake Bluff Fire and Police Departments will be honored.

Libertyville
First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville will be hosting a special service of prayer and remembrance at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 11. Candles will be lit in memory of those who lost their lives or find themselves continuing to grieve the events.

Grayslake
Lake County families are invited to support a Sept. 11 memorial service that will attempt to fill the entire Grayslake North High School football stadium in remembrance of the terrorist attacks. Residents can support event by donating and by attending the event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at Grayslake North High School’s stadium, 1925 N. Route 83 in Grayslake.

Lake Zurich
Harvest Bible Chapel, 255 Quentin Rd, Lake Zurich, will hold a 9/11 service from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The service will be outdoors.

The Lake Zurich High School choir is inviting the entire community to free concerts Sunday at the Performing Arts Center at 1p.m. and 3:30 p.m  The concert, In Remembrance, honors those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

Barrington
Barrington will host a remembrance ceremony on Sunday. The event will take place at Barrington's Memorial Park at 8:30 a.m.  The keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, (R) 6th District.

Students and staff in District 220 will observe 11 seconds of silence on Friday to honor the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Buffalo Grove
Buffalo Grove will host a remembrance ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday at Buffalo Grove High School. The event will include patriotic music performed by the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band and remarks from village officials, law enforcement representatives, military members and local clergy leaders.

School District 102 will mark the anniversary with a "People for Peace" program. In conjunction with Patriot Day on Sept. 12, red, white and blue clothing is encouraged. The district will mark the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21 by inviting everyone to dress in peace-themed clothing. The district will observe a minute of silence at noon.

Deerfield
Rabbi Aaron Melman will speak in Deerfield at 2 p.m. Sunday at Deerfield Village Hall, 850 Waukegan Rd, Deerfield. Melman will talk about his personal experience as student chaplain for the New York Fire Department on 9/11. The event is free.

Huntley
The 9/11 American Flag Memorial Project will feature 2,977 flags commemorating each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial will be at 8 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Fountain Amphitheatre at Sun City Huntley. The event will include a color guard, prayers for the victims and their families and a narrative given by Orion Samuelson of the events that morning.

Huntley will host a memorial at noon Sunday at the James C. Dhamer Town Square on Main Street. In addition to Huntley Village President Charles Sass, other scheduled speakers include: the Rev. Mark Boster of the Shepherd of the Prairie Church, the Rev. Steve Knox of St. Mary’s Church and Bruce Cole of the Faith Community Church.

Northbrook
Northbrook will host a 9/11 remembrance event at 7:45 a.m., Sunday at the  Village of Northbrook Fire Department Headquarters
to honor those who lost their lives and heroes of 9/11 during a solemn observance with police and fire personnel.

A Day of Hope event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Northbrook United Methodist Church. Members of Northbrook United Methodist Church will participate in a 15-minute service followed by a day of volunteer work in the community. Activities include cleaning public parks, singing at nursing homes, tending to community gardens, helping organize at a resale store and food panty, and working at facilities that serve the poor or homeless, among others. The Northbrook Symphony Orchestra and the New Tradition Chorus come together in concert for the first time to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with inspirational American music. Members of the Northbrook Fire Department provide an honor guard for the National Anthem from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m, Sunday at Glenbrook North High School.
