Former Lake Forest High School quarterback Tommy Rees is spending the summer in South Bend, Ind., working out with his Notre Dame football teammates while attending summer school classes.

Rees, who has been charged and pleaded not guilty to four misdemeanors after his May 3 arrest at a house party in South Bend, has been allowed to participate in team workouts by Irish head coach Brian Kelly, who confirmed that to the South Bend Tribune at a golf outing Monday.

Rees started 16 of the past 17 games at Notre Dame, and remains in a four-way battle for the starting job with Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson and Gunner Kiel.

The legal ramifications of his arrest return to the forefront July 17 with a status hearing in St. Joseph County court. Rees faces two counts of resisting arrest and one count each of underage drinking and battery. Senior linebacker Carlo Calabrese was arrested at the same off-campus party and charged with one count of misdemeanor intimidation for allegedly threatening a South Bend police officer. His hearing is Aug. 20, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Both were arrested at a party that drew South Bend police after a call about the noise level. Police reported they found open containers of beer and other alcohol beverages in the backyard, according to the South Bend Tribune.

According to officers in the Tribune account, several people were ordered to stop after they began jumping over a fence. Rees was the only one of that group who ran from the scene. When police caught up to him, Rees allegedly kneed an officer in the abdomen.
