Pitbulls Deserve Just As Much Love As Other Dogs
Bad reputations a reflection of the owners, not the breed.
Mention Pit Bulls or Pit Bull mixes and many people cringe.
These dogs get the worst raps, yet 99 percent of them are sweet, loving, smart and so loyal.
“It’s the owner, not the dog” applies to this dog more than any other breed when they are maligned and feared. Their fierce loyalty and bright nature is a flaw when the wrong person teaches them to fight and hate.
Pity the Pit Bull for being the perfect target for many angry young men who fight them and use them as fear mongers. These dogs are lovers, not fighters!
In the past five years, a groundswell of support has swept over this country as pit bulls are being rescued, rehabbed and even turned into therapy dogs. The hit TV show, "The Dog Whisperer", features many pit bulls, including Daddy, the huge sweet Pittie who helps Caesar Milan train all sort of dogs.
Rachel Ray’s dog, Isaboo, is the inspiration for her line of dog food. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah (www.bestfriends.org) rescues dozens of pit bulls, including half of Michael Vick’s dogs. Pit rescues are springing up all across the country.
Watch the YouTube video from a rescue called Big Hearts for Big Dogs. If this doesn’t change your mind about the temperament of Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes, nothing will. What you will witness is the astonishing ability of this breed to forgive, trust and still love after horrendous abuse.
Interested in pit bulls a little now? Almost every shelter in the Chicago area has some, while there are also breed rescues that specialize in pits if you Google Pit Bull rescues in the Chicago area.
Around home, you can check out Orphans of the Storm in Riverwoods at www.orphansofthestorm.org. Animal Care and Control of Chicago, the main pound for the city, is also full of them and they are a kill shelter, and, sadly, you can always find this breed there.
Do not be afraid of Pit Bulls! You are denying yourself the true pleasure of knowing an incredible breed if you automatically walk away from them at a shelter or rescue group. I worked with many of them at Save-a-Pet as a volunteer animal massage therapist, and they are amazingly sweet!

It is unfortunate that this breed has such a bad reputation. The bully breeds can make wonderful family dogs if they are socialized and have positive training experiences. Any dog can become a problem without the owner's commitment to training. Remember to look at the deed, not the breed!

Remi is so adorable. I wish I could take her but can't right now. I have 15 year old pit mix and a year old pit bull. They are both terrific dogs. I will definitely get another pit when I can. I pray that Remi finds a forever home. Thank you so much to the family that is taking care of her now.

Sorry, folks, but pit bulls have been bred for over a century for a proclivity to attack other dogs and keep up the attack until the other dog is dead. It isn't just training. In fact, it isn't even primarily training--it is BREEDING. Rachel Ray's pit bull attacked and seriously injured another dog. I supposed it is possible that Rachel Ray trained her dog to fight, but I would guess it was unlikely.
You also cite to the Vick pit bulls, many of whom are too dangerous to go to normal home EVEN AFTER YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL REHABILTATION. In fact, one of the Vick pit bulls at Best Friends (mentioned in your article) broke out of his enclosure, broke into the enclosure of another dog, killed that dog then broke into the enclosure of yet another dog and seriously injured him.

People who really want to help pit bulls need to realize that glossing over the problematic behaviors for which pit bulls have been bred (such as way disproportionate dangerousness toward other animals, low arousal threshhold, and "gameness" which is the quality of never stopping an attack once one is commenced) is not the way to do it. Pit bulls are, at best, a challenging breed for even an experienced dog owner. At worst, they are capable of killing and willing to kill. Most of the people who might be qualified to own a pit bull know enough to know that they don't want to own a dog who is likely (whatever his training and socialization) to be dog aggressive. Just as most labradors (but not all) like to swim and retrieve and most border collies (but not all) like to herd, most pit bulls like to do what they were bred to do. Unfortunately, what pit bulls were bred to do is kill other dogs.

To Dogcentric ~ Your confidence astounds me but unfortunately your ignorance causes you to believe what you hear is fact w/out doing your homework 1st: originally bred in british isles early 100's to "bait" bulls. In 1835 bull baiting was deemed iinhumane & illegal. Their history in america began when brought by immigrants amidst a still developing nation & were valued as vital helpers on family farms.

Teresa Gill,
Uh, no. Pit bulls are a mixture of bulldogs (the dogs who were bred to bait bulls) and terriers. They were bred specifically for dog fighting in the pit (hence their name). But whatever their long ago history in a "still developing nation," there is absolutely no doubt that for more than 100 years, they were (and are) bred by dog fighters for dangerousness toward other dogs. Pit bulls were (and are) specifically bred for "gameness," which the the quality of never stopping an attack until their opponant is dead. In fact, when two pit bulls killed ex-marine Jerry Yates in California last year, they kept up the attack even AFTER he was dead, inflicting significant post mortum injuries. Pit bull owners are told (by responsible pit bull authorities, not people who spread the lie of "it's all in how you raise 'em") to carry a "break stick" because if an aroused pit bull gets a grip on another dog, it is almost impossible to get him to let go. The break stick is used to pry open his jaws, hopefully before he kills the other dog.
This is a dog that should be RARE. Breed specific laws need to be passed requiring the spay/neuter of all pit bulls and pit bull mixes except AKC and UKC-PR registered show dogs.

There's alot of information on the internet about the pit bull and their histery. Every dog has there good points to them. The strong will and indurance to (fight) till the end is a quality of a pit bull if put in the proper upbringing re: the pit bull that saved the family on a fire. My pit would chew on sticks and get them caught in the upper bridge in her mouth, she would be choking trying to get this stick out so I had to hold her down as she was in a panik and her mouth was bleeding. I up my hand in her mouth up to my wrist to get the stick out (the couple times this happened thinking in her pannicked state of mind she could bite my hand off). That was trust. Any dog has the capabilities of hurting someone. I believe in researching an animal before a person gets one. I did and couldn't have a better friend than my baby girl!!! P.S. Petey, the little rascals dog; Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated military dog; Popsicle, one of the top customs drug dogs...etc... the list goes on... Love these dogs!!!
