Hey Brian I've driven that touhy stretch of road where that guy was hit , an bikers an walkers insist on useing the street instead of the grassy area up on the curb .An they take up more lane useage than they have to just case they can. An it causes people to either brake hard last minute if you can't get over in the left lane or almost causes an accident cause the vehicles have no choice but to side swipe the vehicle next to them . Over the 20 yrs I've driven that same spot where he was hit on touhy I myself have almost takin out a walker or biker. ... The speed limit there is fast moving..

Ok yes Brian pedestrians do have the right of way. So if u Wana jump out in front of a moving vehicle just cause u have the right to do so don't complain when ur ass gets hit cause he couldn't stop just cause u have the right as a pedestrian , cause ur right. Please, this should be a forum for opinions, which in this country, should not warrant a personal attack.

We should remember that bikes have a legal right to use the road, and they are doing all of us some good. In some cases they are recreational (saving all of us money in the medical expense pool by staying in shape), but in some cases they are transportation (and are saving all of us valuable fuel and traffic congestion).

On the other hand, cyclists also need to abide by rules. Bicycles have a rules of the road also:

They still need to a obey traffic signals, and are supposed to ride single file as close to the edge of the road as possible. There are going to be some cyclists that put themselves in danger, and there are going to be cases of cyclists that are victims of texting while driving, or lack of consideration for others.

I feel that the bigger problem is our growing attitude of "it is all about me". Motorists would rather squeeze past a bike and wait at the next light, than slow down for 5-10 seconds to pass safely. Some cyclists would rather ride 2 abreast in the middle of the lane than ride single file on the edge where it might be a little bumpier. If we all gave some consideration to the other person, think how well that would work?

Second off if you want to exercise you right to ride in the street by all means do so. But accidents do happen. If you insist upon riding your bike during heavy vehicular traffic times and at dawn, dusk or night you have a death wish. Yes bikes should be able to ride the roads along with cars. Reality: people behind the wheel may be tired from work, under the influence of drugs/alcohol/prescriptions, distracted, texting, talking whatever...fill in the blank reason. That is why it is simply NOT WORTH IT. Even people and kids walking or riding their bikes on sidewalks, such as the deaths that occurred in Skokie and Highland Park, aren't safe. We live in a time that requires vigilance of one's surroundings at all times. With so many people on the roads now, the odds are stacked not in favor of "if" something will go wrong, but "when" something will go wrong. You need to be alert and aware.
