Students Spend Spring Break with Habitat for Humanity

Nine Lake Forest College students and one staff member recently spent their spring break near Winona, Minn., helping Habitat for Humanity build a home for community members in need.

Minnesota isn't your typical spring break destination, but for a group of caring Lake Forest College students, it was the best place they could spend their time away from school.

On March 10, nine students and one staff member traveled to Minnesota to spend the week working with Habitat for Humanity on a needy family's new home, as well as other projects.

In the town of Harmony, Minn., the group primed and painted a four-bedroom ranch home for a single mother and her five children. In Winona, Minn., they painted trim and prepped doors for painting for Habitat homes.

"I decided to go on this trip because of the incredible opportunity we have as Lake Forest College students to directly help a family in need," said student Lauren Sanford, who serves as president of the College’s Habitat for Humanity chapter. "Being able to work side-by-side with the future owner of the house is rewarding and eye opening."

The students stayed in a cabin throughout the week in the tiny town of Whalan, which has but 60 residents. They spent their free time cooking meals, watching movies, playing games, and enjoying the great, wintry outdoors.

In addition to the annual spring break trip, the college’s Habitat for Humanity organization now participates in "build days" closer to home once or twice a month. Last fall, students helped with houses in Lake and McHenry counties in and in Lake Geneva, Wis. Previous to this year, the group had placed most of its focus on the out-of-state trips.

A job well done to the following participants:

Charlotte Austin, of Northbrook; Martina Bright, of Chicago; Craig Da Silva, of Bangalore, India; Kellie Doyle, Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing for Lake Forest College; JerDrema Flynt, of Roxbury, Mass.; Taylor Henderson, of Little Rock, Ark.; Galina Lipkin, of Buffalo Grove; Lauren Sanford, of Whittier, Calif.; Matthew Spehlmann, of Lake Forest; and Scott Straight, of West Lafayette, Ind.
