Sweet Things Under New Ownership
Lake Bluff candy shop stays put, adds products.
A new face will greet you when visiting Sweet Things Candy & Gift Shop in Lake Bluff.
Kimberly Duty took over ownership of the 615 Sheridan Road candy shop on May 1, buying it from previous proprietors Denise Peterson and Ilene Disch, who founded it in October 2011.
Duty, a personal banker, intends to embody the spirit of exceptional customer service at the new rearranged store.
“This is my first major storefront business that offers face-to-face service. I am excited about interacting with clients in a friendly environment,” said Duty, who already has rearranged the store’s layout “to eliminate limitations.”
Sweet Things will continue to offer the same specialized, bulk and kid-friendly candy carried by the previous owners, as well as gift baskets and small toys. An ice cream freezer has been added. Italian Ice, Klondike bars and Skinny Cow treats are available for purchase.
Duty attributed her entrepreneur activity to the model set by her parents, owners of Hilary’s Restaurant in Waukegan.
“I know the retail industry can be extremely hectic, but it is also fun to meet new people,” she said.
Donning Sweet Things aprons, Duty’s three children — Jauzlyn, Kaylin and Kendall — are ready to assist with kid-friendly recommendations, carry packages and ensure the quality customer service Duty wants to provide.
A Jazzercise enthusiast, Duty became familiar with Lake Bluff’s charm after marching in the Fourth of July parade with the Jazzercise group last year.
“Lake Bluff is a beautiful town. I fell in love with the store the first time I saw it," Duty said.
Previous owners explained that local kids like the store in the neighborhood. “I liked the fact that the store is kid-friendly, it has good products and we can add more as we progress” said Duty.
For now, Duty is pleased with the amount of graduation and Father’s Day basket orders, and plans to continue to expand her corporate presence through promotion of employee of the month gifts.
