VIDEO: Catching Up With Lake Forest Wide Receiver Bo Dever

Almost eight weeks before the Scouts begin the 2011 season, one of their top offensive players already has decided on a college.

At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, wide receiver and rising senior Bo Dever has the size and skills to play college football.

He has the brains: 27 ACT and a 4.5 grade point average.

He also has the pedigree: his father, Dave, played at the University of Michigan. So when Michigan offered him a walk-on position at a recent summer camp, he accepted, forgoing what most likely for him would have been a busy recruiting season.

Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Patch caught up with Dever and got the inside story on his decision to become a Wolverine.

What does Dever think about the 2011 Scouts? He gives a few names to look out for this fall during this Facebook interview.

So tell us how this all happened?

I was at their five-day summer camp (June 20-24). Before camp, their wide receiver coach Jeff Hecklinski told me we would have a meeting at the end of camp to discuss some stuff, like what he liked about me, flaws. Then on the second day of camp (June 21), he told me he wanted to have a meeting with me later that day to discuss some things with my dad (Dave) and I.

What happened at that meeting?

He (Hecklinski) told me they weren't going to offer me a scholarship at that moment, but I have a spot on their team and that I am into the school. He said that they most likely weren't going to take any other wideouts, one at the most, as they have other positions to fill on defense. He said he thinks I can make a huge impact on the team, and if I earn playing time I could earn a scholarship by my junior year. I told him Michigan was the place for me.

Why commit now two months before your senior season starts?

They told me (at the camp) that some Mid-American Conference schools were going to offer (a scholarship) later in the week, but I didn't really care about any of those. Since I was young, I wanted to play football at Michigan. That's where I set my goal and when the opportunity came I didn't want to pass it up.

What does it mean for this season?

I wanted to get that stress load off my shoulders. I know kids are going to be stressing about where they are going to school, where they are going to play football. Now I know I can have a worry-free season, not have to worry about stats, and just go out and have fun and help the team more.

Your father played football at Michigan (Dave Dever, 1984-87). How much did this influence your decision?

I think the first thing I wore coming out of the hospital was a Michigan baby outfit. As long as I can remember, it's always been Michigan. I'm named after his coach, Bo Schembechler. You go to our house, everything is Michigan. You don't see any other college schools.

What is the most unusual Michigan item you own?

I have a pair of Michigan underwear that my grandmother bought me awhile back. They were too big and I finally grew into them. I still wear them.

Boxers or briefs?

Boxers, of course. (Laughs).
