VIDEO: Neurological Doctor Says Rate of Concussions for Girls Higher Than Boys

If you are the parent of a female athlete, some new statistics may surprise you.
Speaking at concussion seminar at Monday night, Dr. Julian Bailes stated how female athletes are more likely to be diagnosed with concussions than male athletes.

Dr. Bailes, chair of neurosurgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem, said girls soccer players reported concussions at a 68 percent higher rate than boys. That leads to the next statistic that the second highest number of concussions after football occur in girls soccer.
In basketball, the rate of concussions is as much three times higher for girls compared to boys, according to Dr. Bailes, who is a founding member and director of the Brain Injury Research Institute, which focuses on the study of traumatic brain injuries and their prevention.

Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch caught up with Dr. Bailes after the seminar, where he spoke more on the subject.
