Were the Lake Forest Superintendent's Salary Perks Fair?

Do you think that the salary perks former Lake Forest superintendent Harry Griffith received were over-the-top? Or were they completely acceptable? Weigh in here!

A Chicago Tribune article published last weekend reflected on spending by the Lake Forest school board on former superintendent Harry Griffith, especially concerning the issues of large travel expenses, forgiveness of a $75,000 loan to purchase a house and his school-paid-for car being given to him upon his retirement.

But how do you feel? Do you think the perks justified, or completely ridiculous? Add your opinion to our poll here!

When economy was going well, voters in community fell asleep and did not ask questions about pension planning or clarity on other perks. Loan to assist move into community is not unusual for corporate relocations in years past. It is not a question of whether they are fair or not. It is a question of the role of the board, transparency, and community education. There were a lot of good things done in consolidating some administrative functions, use of resources, innovative programming. Dr Griffith did nothing wrong by asking for compensation or perks. Board and community was negligent in its analysis and understanding of unexpected consequences.

Harry Griffith's legacy has been defined by the scandal at Deerpath Middle School. At issue is the community's trust in Harry Griffith and the school boards that allowed him to define his legacy. I personally lost trust in both. We need to put this behind us and move forward.

For the love of God. Can't this community let anything die! It is over. Move on. All of this focus is wasted time and ridiculous. Not to mention, all the facts were not mentioned. If mistakes were made, so be it. We have wonderful schools and a wonderful board.

We'll see if this gets through the Patch censors. They rejected a previous comment saying something similar, only I referred to Patch as a leech on the LF community because it continues to stir the pot on this to get page views-does lots for them but is bad for LF. I guess when you are losing as much money as they are, you'll do anything. Whatever happened to journalistic integrity of community media? In Patch's case, it's dead.

@Mary Ann - Until someone steps up and takes responsibility, the issue will continue to linger. Harry refused to be accountable for the Steinert fiasco, instead, he pointed the finger at his HR person. The Board refused to accept responsibility for Harry. Instead, they tried to brush it under the carpet until the community called them on it.

When there is a new school board and a new Superintendent who was not hired by the Harry puppets it will be over with. However, we will forever be in an era where the community is vigilant of excess in the school system.

How can we put this behind us when the board (s) or someone in authority, names the Admin building on west Campus in his honor? Outrageous!

Rather than name the West Campus after Harry. Let's name a bank after him.

I am tired of naming rights and the jaded impression of service that inspires them--When a person performs their job in a responsible manner, they are being paid for exactly the reason they were hired. Communities must learn to distinguish between ordinary and extraordinary--there is nothing in this circumstance that suggests extraordinary. Let's go back to giving gold watches.

Everyone who says oh forget about doesn't know the value of a dollar. Some of my hard earned money is going to this man's outrageous expenses and I'm pissed. Why dont you just give me some of your money so i can go to a strip club or buy a fancy dinner.

The inmates are running the asylum. This is a superintendent position not the CEO of IBM. The salary and perks are not in line with his position or within the market. I hope we learn from this and then look at the City Manager and the perks afforded to him. Subsidized housing and all the other perks.

all the $$$$ in the world would not be worth working with the ungrateful, over bearing and ever complaining parents. It truly is battle pay. Harry was lucky to still be alive after his tour of duty.

Marco,
Ask that you get your head out of the Sangria............ Guess why blame Harry as he is nothing more than an employee of the board.
This will all be over when we have a new board that spends for the right reasons and is accountable to the community. No hiding, No tall Grass,

Tax payers deserve information, and should appreciate the media for finding and sharing it! I didn’t know about the perks, the trip to China, the huge pension, until I read about it! A reader claims it’s “Bad for LF”? It makes us look bad, but not because the Patch has “stirred up the pot”, but because all these things actually happened! So we should just hush up ( “to protect LF”? ) when our money is being misspent? All of this “stirring of the pot” just might help to prevent this from happening again...
