The Lake Forest Academy Prep Hockey team captured the Gold Medal Classic, the Midget AAA Championship game, on Feb. 12 in Madison, Wis. In a stunning overtime 5-4 victory, the Caxys beat highly ranked Shattuck-St. Mary's. Adaobi Okoli, a senior, has been named a National Achievement Scholarship Program Finalist and will qualify for National Achievement Scholarships offered in 2012. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Black students may enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT and meeting other published requirements for participation. Six members of the class of 2012 have been named National Merit Semifinalists. They include: Ariana Bhatia, Ben Diaz, Hunter Johnstone, Andrea Shen, Matthew Stevens, and Arwah Yaqub. These high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finals level of the competition. The LFA Math team placed second overall out of nine teams at the regional competition and may earn an “at-large” bid to the state finals. Many individual competitors qualified for state competition. Lake Forest Academy will have a viewing of the acclaimed documentary, “Race to Nowhere,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Cressey Center. “Race to Nowhere” points to the silent epidemic in schools: cheating has become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Professor Ian Morris of Stanford University will give a public lecture at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Cressey Auditorium at Lake Forest Academy. Morris, a world-renowned archaeologist and historian, will discuss his new book, “Why the West Rules –For Now.” Morris’ book ambitiously surveys the history of East and West from our pre-human ancestors to the present day and beyond, presenting an innovative framework for understanding the patterns of history and what they reveal about the future. Thirteen members of Lake Forest Academy’s Class of 2011 were named 2011-12 Illinois State Scholars. Given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, this prestigious award recognized 17, 335 high school students from 749 schools from across the state. Recipients rank in the top 10 percent of high school seniors across the state. Selection is limited to Illinois residents and is based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. Lake Forest Academy hosts two musical events in January. On Jan. 6, classical guitarist and 2001 LFA alumnus Adam Levin will perform with violinist William Knuth in historic Reid Hall. The free concert will begin at 7 p.m. On Jan. 21, award winning songwriters Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich will perform a free concert in the Cressey Center for the Arts. Heisler and Goldrich are best known for songs, "Taylor, the Latte Boy" and "Alto's Lament."
