Students at Rondout School in Lake Forest boarded "The Polar Express" Monday dressed in their pajamas during an activity for the school's first and second graders. Teachers Jeanine Sweeney and Roxanne Greenberg read the story in parts, and then the students departed the train to participate in activities which emphasized their creativity as much as their use of descriptive words related to the story.

The answer to how Superman leaped skyscrapers in a single bound may have eluded us. However, Adam Reed Tucker has allowed us to glimpse what it’s like to build one — if only on a smaller scale. Last Saturday, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society hosted a workshop called Reaching New Heights through Lego Design, which featured Tucker, a designer of architectural model kits for Lego. In addition to hearing his insights as a Lego artist, aspiring architects (ages seven and up) got to build a model kit he designed of the Burj Khalifa, as well as bring their own Lego skyscraper designs …

Sunrise Beach didn’t require the power of Pine-Sol with the 26 volunteers combing its coast for trash last Saturday. Mr. Clean had nothing on these cleaning agents, who converged upon the annual event, coordinated by the Alliance for the Great Lakes, to haul away more than 250 pounds of garbage from Lake Bluff’s nearly mile-long shoreline. This year brought in a mess of wayward tennis balls, cigarette butts, and empty beer bottles. The strangest piece of wreckage was a semitrailer frame with attached mud flap. The cleanup helps Lake Bluff Park District staff conclude the summer season, …

Most of the more than 700 race participants hailed from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, although some came from as far away as Virginia and California.

The crowd may have thinned Saturday night after Dave Mason and his band finished their show behind Lake Forest City Hall as the headliner for Heritage Festival. But the remaining fans -- perhaps more than 1,000 -- were re-energized by a 20-minute laser show which sent Lake Forest's 150th anniversary into the future. Classic rock and current pop music got fans jumping and cheering, ending the celebration on an even higher note.
