WHAT: Ragdale, the nationally acclaimed artist retreat located in Lake Forest, offers monthly, docent-led tours from June – September for individuals and small groups. Groups of 10 or more can also schedule tours throughout the summer with advance reservations. Located on the former country estate of Arts and Crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, a Ragdale tour includes: the recently restored, historic Ragdale House, visual artist studios, exquisite gardens, an introduction to the Shaw family history and the artist-in-residency program that accommodates over 200 artists/year.
WHEN: Thursdays at 10am on the following dates: June 21, July 26, August 23 and September 20. Tours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Meet on the front porch of the Ragdale House. Limited parking available.
WHY: These public tours are rare opportunities to see behind-the-scenes at an artists’ residency, typically closed to the public. Visitors can experience the magic of this 5-acre site which includes two historic homes, several artist studios, gardens, and vistas of 50 acres of virgin prairie. The Ragdale House, originally built in 1897, in the Arts and Crafts tradition, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It re-opened in June, 2012 after undergoing a one-year, $3.2 million restoration to return it to its 1926 splendor.

Ragdale is a non-profit artist residency program, located in Arts and Crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw’s Lake Forest country estate. Built in 1897, the Ragdale House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1976, Shaw’s granddaughter Alice Judson Hayes transformed the family’s summer home into an artists-in-residence program. Today Ragdale hosts up to 200 artists, writers, and composers each year, making it one of the largest interdisciplinary artists’ communities in the country. Noted past residents include: Audrey Niffenegger (The Time Traveller’s Wife), Heidi Durrow (The Girl Who Fell from the Sky), Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here), and Nancy Horan (Loving Frank: A Novel). The Ragdale Foundation is an artists' retreat center that has been in Lake Forest for more than 100 years. It is known nationwide for its residency program, which hosts more than 200 artists each year. The foundation works to make the arts more accessible to the public, while providing artists with a peaceful setting that is designed to help and assist with the creative process. The Ragdale Foundation also runs community and preservation programs.
