New technologies, as well as sweeping legal and rapid cultural changes, constitute vexing challenges to providers and consumers of medical care who strive to live and act in the world as moral Catholics.  We will explore some of the thorny moral tests Catholics face today by turning to the Catechism of the Catholic Church for direction and answer the timely question "Can Modern Medicine be Moral?" in the affirmative.

Our presenter for the July 30th session is Dr. Thomas Palella.  Tom Palella attended Loyola Academy, received a B.S. (physics/mathematics) from John Carroll University and an M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  His early career was spent at the University of Michigan Medical School as a researcher and educator.  He served as Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Physician -in-Chief of the Rackham Arthritis Research Center and Director of the National Institutes of Health funded University of Michigan Multipurpose Arthritis Center.  He has published over one hundred peer reviewed articles, reviews and abstracts.  Since 1990, he has practiced rheumatology in the Chicago suburbs.

Catholics and non-Catholics alike are invited to these lively talks with robust Q & A, followed by informal fellowship with wine & cheese.  The sessions begin promptly at 7 p.m. in the School of St. Mary’s Multi-Purpose Room, 175 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest and end at 8:30 p.m.
