Century Club Adds Three Families, Lake Forest Garden Club

The Century Club is about to grow.

The will add present three Centennial Family awards and recognize the 100th anniversary of the Lake Forest Garden Club at its annual meeting at 2 p.m. May 6 at Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel on the campus of .

Prue Beidler will present a lecture tracing the Lake Forest Garden Club’s history since 1912. The Lake Forest Garden Club is a founding member of the Garden Club of America, and has played a significant role over the past century in shaping the Lake Forest landscape.

The three families to be honored include the Atteridge family, nominated by Debi Kiddle; the Dick family, nominated by John H. Dick and Madeleine B. Dugan; and the Kelley family, nominated by Bryan J. Krusmark.

Each family’s story will be told in a slide show full of fun photographs and fascinating anecdotes from more than 100 years in Lake Forest/Lake Bluff.

The Atteridges were among the earliest pioneer families to settle in Lake Forest, arriving in 1837. By 1850 the farms of Atteridge relations included all the land bounded by Laurel, McKinley, Deerpath and Route. 41.

Albert Blake Dick, inventor of the mimeograph, and his family first began spending summers in Lake Forest in the late 1890s; in 1902 the iconic family estate, Westmoreland, was completed.

The patriarch of the Kelley family, Alexander Kelley, initially ventured here in 1878, accompanying the first lot of Aberdeen Angus cattle imported from Scotland for the Lake Forest firm of Anderson and Findlay. He was firmly established in Lake Forest by 1882.

Event guests are also invited to join in a light reception following the program across the street at Glen Rowan House. Parking in any campus spot will be available; the chapel is located at the Middle Campus entrance.
