Kids Nature Fun Fest

On May 19, 2011, Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed the month of June as Leave No Child Inside Month in the State of Illinois.

The Chicago Wilderness alliance is celebrating by offering a series of free, family events featuring lively activities designed to nurture children’s sense of wonder and appreciation for nature and to help parents and caregivers feel more comfortable guiding outdoor play and recreation during future trips to local parks, preserves, and nature areas.

The Lake County Forest Preserves is hosting Kids Nature Fun Fest on June 12 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Greenbelt Forest Preserve, Shelter B, 1215 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, ILL. Activities are recommended for children ages 4 through 12.

“The Nature Fun Fest serves a dual purpose,” according to Lake County Forest Preserve President Ann Maine. “Children can play and explore outdoors at the event. Families can take away ideas and knowledge that will inspire them to keep visiting our forest preserves to take part in healthy outdoor activities.”

Festivities include fort building, ponding, fun with mud, critter hunt, insect collect, camping demonstrations with marshmallow roasting and more. There will also be relay races, archery and other games that emphasize active play and movement.

"Leave No Child Inside Month events are designed to bring families together around enriching experiences in nature and inspire the curiosity that leads to a life-long connection to the natural world," said Melinda Pruett-Jones, Executive Director, Chicago Wilderness.
