Smelt - O - Rama

Join the Lake Forest Recreation Department at the Boating Pavilion at Forest Park Beach and see a demonstration of two methods of smelting: done-gill line and dip netting. Learn how to catch, clean and cook osmerus mordax, smelt, as they return to the shores of Lake Forest each spring to spawn.

Everyone will have a chance to try smelting with nets provided by the Lake Forest Recreation Department. And, about 20 pounds of smelt have already been caught and will be prepared during the event so that everyone will be able to sample the Great Lakes delicacy.

Live entertainment will be provided by award-winning folk singer Mark Dvorak. He will perform songs and share stories about the Great Lakes.
