Historical Photo Guessing Game: Photo Is Of Green Bay Road In Lake Forest

Weekly posting celebrates Lake Forest's 150th anniversary.

Green Bay Road, as reader Gail Hodges noted, was also known as the Green Bay Military Trail and the Chicago and Milwaukee Road back in the 1800s.

The original road roughly followed a Potawatomi Native American trail and may have been located further to the west than its present site. Construction began on a road through the area in 1833.

In its first incarnation, Green Bay Road was little more than a blazed trail through the forest with simple log bridges over streams. It was used to transport military troops and supplies between Fort Dearborn in Chicago, Illinois and Fort Howard in Green Bay, Wis.
