Historical Photo Guessing Game: Lake Forest Man is Donald McLennan

Weekly posting celebrates the city's sesquicentennial.

I think I might have stumped everyone on this one.

The information comes from the Illinois St. Andrew Society, which has an ongoing history project documenting the many Scottish families who helped found Lake Forest.

Donald R. McLennan (1873-1944) was the co-founder of the insurance brokerage firm renamed Marsh and McLennan in 1906. By 1917, the year the United States entered World War I, Marsh & McLennan had established offices throughout the country.

During the war, McLennan became responsible for the allocation and regulation of building materials for purposes other than those directly related to the war effort. For the duration of the war, no U.S. company could build an industrial plant without McLennan's approval. He remained chairman from 1933 until his death.

The Rev Scotty McLennan, current Dean at Stanford, is Donald's grandson. Scotty is featured in the "Doonesbury" comic strip as "Rev Scotty Sloan" -- a red haired, bearded Rev. Rev Scotty McLennan and comic creator Gary Trudeau were college roommates.

The elder McLennan lived in a house known as Stornoway, which is named after a town on the Isle of Lewis. The mansion has 21 rooms (7 bedrooms and 7 full baths and one half bath) and was owned from 2003-2009 by Bill Wrigley.

We'll be back next weekend with another historical photo posting. If you have a historical photo to submit, e-mail the editor. We're grateful for your submissions.
