Lake Bluff Brewing Takes Gold in National Beer Competition

Popular Lake Bluff Brewing Company has another reason to be boastful—a Gold Medal win at the U.S. Open Beer Championship.

Lake Bluff Brewing Company is already a wildly popular destination to enjoy craft beer on tap, munch on local food and hear live music.

Now, the hometown brewery has made its mark on a national scale by winning a Gold Medal at the this summer's 2013 Unites States Open Beer Championship in the Wood Barrel Imperial Stout category.

The winning brew, dubbed Kosmonaut Russian Imperial Stout, was created by Master brewer Mike Dorneker, who told the Lake Forester he wanted to something different for the competition, so he used whiskey barrels to age the beer rather than bourbon barrels.

Lake Bluff Brewing Company owners Rodd Specketer and Dave Burns also chose recipes to be brewed in the whiskey barrels, but it was Dorneker's creation that was ultimately entered into the competition, according to the Lake Forester.
