Lake Forest Library Book Sale Begins Sept. 12
The little sale that began under a yellow tent in Market Square in 1976 has grown into one of the nation's premier book sales and an eagerly awaited annual event for adults, children, teachers and collectors alike.
The Friends of Lake Forest Library will host their 38th annual book sale from Sept. 12-15 at Lake Forest Recreation Center, 400 Hastings Road.
In its first year, the sale brought in $4,000. Now, 38 years later, the sale clears an estimated $130,000 annually, which the Friends group uses to fund programs including the adult and children’s library reading programs, scholarships for local students, an art program, the movie rental machine at the West Side train station and more. The Friends also provides valuable assistance with important capital improvement projects that fall outside the library’s annual budget, such as recent window replacements in the historic building.
Again this year, the sale will offer more than 100,000 high quality, gently used books, DVDs, music CDs, books on CD, video games and other items in 108 categories at bargain prices.
Sale times are:
Thursday, Sept. 12: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Open to Friends members and volunteers. Memberships will be available at the door ($25) and there will be a 20 percent mark up on sales.
Friday, Sept. 13: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 14: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Teachers Day with a 10 percent discount to teachers with an identification.
Sunday, Sept. 15: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 50 percent off all items.
“What many residents don’t realize is that the book and other donations they drop off at the rear of the library throughout the year help us build this wonderful sale, which in-turn funds the many programs we provide for them to enjoy,” said sale co-chair Sande Noble. “We hope they’ll come and shop and keep those valuable donations of adult and children’s books, CDs, DVDs and other items coming!”
In addition to crowds of eager shoppers, success of the sale hinges on the support of hundreds of volunteers, as well as local sponsors including Northern Trust Bank, Lake Forest Bank & Trust, Cummins Law Office, Knauz Auto Group, Market House Restaurant, Sunset Foods, CubeSmart and supporters including Baytree Bank & Trust Co., BMO Harris Bank, First Midwest Bank, Ballen & Co., Inc., and The Private Bank.
