Lake Forest Teen to Participate in 5K Fundraiser

Special Gifts Theatre invites people of all ages to participate in this weekend's 5K Run and Magic Carpet Walk.

Special Gifts Theatre (SGT), a nonprofit organization serving children with special needs throughout the northern suburbs, will host a 5K Run and Magic Carpet Walk on Sept. 21 at Wood Oaks Park, 1150 Sanders Road, Northbrook.

Kids and adults of all ages are invited to participate in this event, which will directly benefit SGT. Following the race and walk, participants are welcome to attend the family-friendly finishers’ party, complete with face painting, refreshments and a performance by the Theatre’s “Traveling Troupe.”

Student Council member Jack Martin will be among the 5K participants with “Team Jack Attack!” Martin, who lives in Lake Forest, is a sophomore at Stevenson High School.

The event’s $25 registration fee includes an event T-shirt and goody bag. All proceeds will benefit SGT in its mission to enhance the lives of children and teens with special needs through a unique, creative drama experience that enables personal growth, while breaking down stereotypes related to disabilities within the community at large.

Check-in and registration will begin the morning of the run at 7:30 a.m. The 5K will start at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a family friendly finishers’ party at 9:30 a.m.

"This is a really exciting event that will help increase community awareness for our program—plus, it’s an idea that came from our students, for our students,” said SGT’s community outreach coordinator, Elise Moore, who led the planning of this event with SGT’s student council, a group of 22 students and mentors from a variety of Chicagoland suburbs, including Lake Forest. Moore is a 2006 graduate of Lake Forest High School
