Emmeylynn Grace McCarty is first on the scene in the new year. Two babies were also born shortly after midnight, one in Highland Park and one in Evanston.

(Update at 4:45 p.m.) Emmelynn Grace McCarty was the first baby born Tuesday at Lake Forest Hospital. She arrived at 4:01 a.m. Tuesday weighing 6 pounds, 15 ounces. She is 20 inches long.

Emmelynn is the daughter of Katie McCarty of Antioch. Shortly after she was born she also met her grandmother, Sharon McCarty, of Antioch and her great grandmother, Rita Mahan, of Woodstock.

(Earlier at 8:28 a.m.) Naija Niyogi was the first baby born at a North Shore hospital on New Year’s Day. She arrived Jan. 1, 2013 at 12:39 a.m.

Naija was born to Shiladitya Niyogi and Aindrila Gupta of Highland Park at NorthShore University HealthSystem Highland Park Hospital.

The baby girl is 6-pounds, 5-ounces and 19.5 inches. This is the couple’s first child.

About two minutes later, Samson Chambers was born to Chicago residents Donald and Sheryl Chambers at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston at 12:41 a.m.

The boy came in at 8-pounds, 3-ounces and 20-inches.

“I wanted [Samson] to be born on Christmas day and my husband wanted him to be born on New Year’s Day,” Sheryl Chambers said. “My husband got his wish.”

This is the fifth child for the Chambers family. The mother said she now has three girls and two boys.

“Honestly, for me, I think it’s a normal thing. It was a regular day for me,” Chambers said. “We gave him the name Samson [which is] from the bible. The name means ‘being strong.’”

Chambers added that she had family at the hospital celebrating her fifth born child.

“It wasn’t a surprise,” Chambers said. “I was expecting it to happen on New Year’s Day.”
