Samaritan Counseling Center Fundraiser

On Sunday, October 23rd supporters of the Samaritan Counseling Center, as well as lovers of theatre, will gather to watch a matinee performance of The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard at The Writer’s Theatre of Glencoe. This event will raise money for the Wellspring Fund which subsidizes counseling for men. In the play, a married playwright blurs the line between reality and his dramas on the stage as his personal life unravels before his very eyes.

An outreach of the center, the Wellspring Fund takes its name from is an old-fashioned word which refers to a strongly-flowing source of clean water. We all have a personal wellspring flowing into our homes from the city water department. In earlier times, living near a wellspring was a tremendous blessing, for without clean water, life cannot be good.

According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/index.shtml), about half of all Americans will experience some form of mental health problem at some point in their life, a new government report warns, and more must be done to help them. Former Vice-President Al Gore has said, “We need the faith-based counseling programs to become our safety net for mental health care.”

Established over 40 years ago, the Samaritan Counseling Center has seven offices in Evanston, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Wilmette, Winnetka and the Chicago Loop. Their mission is to offer hope, healing and restoration to wholeness in a manner that is professional, ethical, caring and accessible to all.  In vital partnership with congregations and the community at large, we offer a unique integration of psychotherapy and spirituality in the counseling and education services that we provide.
