A New Spin on Business

Lake Forest duo open Joyride Cycle Studio to offer a convenient workout destination.

Maybe it's the music or it could be the parking. Whatever it is, the new Joyride Cycle Studio is getting locals excited about spinning.

Located behind Gabe’s Backstage Lounge in Highwood, this new cycle studio features world-class LeMond bikes, a rocking sound system, and a line-up of top instructors. With state-of-the-art Pilot computers for tracking performance and an upper-level weight and mat workout area for stretching and strength building, the studio offers clients more than just your average ride.

In six months, co-owners and Lake Forest residents Melissa Blake and Eva Lasacco took their idea from conception to reality. Having taught cycling in local health clubs, Melissa already had a loyal following. It wasn't until a local hockey coach asked her to conduct off-ice training at the rink that she got the inspiration -- and aspiration -- to open her own studio.

And that's where Eva came in. With an impressive corporate background and zeal for new challenges, Eva jumped at Melissa's proposal and the idea took off. Their first full week of classes began April 9.

Modeled after elite cycle studios in New York City, Joyride strives to offer clients a unique "mind, body, cardio" workout. "Our goal has been to create an intimate, but never intimidating environment where people can come in and get a great workout," Blake said.

And a great workout it is. On average, cyclists can burn between 500 to 1,000 calories per workout, without high impact injuries and joint stress. It’s also a great way to build endurance and cross-train.

“Unlike a regular bike, the cycles we use feature a weighted flywheel, forcing you to push harder to get movement and upping the intensity of your workout,” Blake said.

But like riding a bike, anyone can do it. “In any given class, we could have an elite triathlete or someone just getting back into exercising,” Blake said. “With spinning, you push yourself at your own pace, and you never feel like you can’t keep up.”

Classes are offered every day of the week. Clients pay as they go, and there are no membership fees and no penalties. Scheduling is offered online through their website www.joyridecyclestudio.com.

Single rides are $18 per person, with discounted rates for students and riders over 65. Joyride also offers discounted multi-ride cards or a special introductory unlimited monthly ride pass.

The studio is located at 218 Greenbay Road, Highwood, and inquiries can call (847) 926-7029.
