Lake Forest Place Retirement Community Hosts Expert on Downsizing

Lake Forest, IL (January 22, 2014)—In a new year, people make resolutions to lose weight, start exercising, pay off bills and get more control over their lives. For seniors planning a move to a retirement community, getting organized and getting rid of "stuff" heads the list.

Older adults are often surrounded by a lifetime of possessions and making decisions about what to do with them isn’t easy. Possessions can represent emotions, attachments and memories. But having a strategy for evaluating them can make the process of “right-sizing” easier.

Lake Forest Place retirement community is  hosting Mary Jo Zeller, director at Gero Solutions, a senior transition and relocation organization, for a luncheon presentation titled “Clutterbug -Right-Sizing Tips and Solutions” on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at noon.

“Figuring out what to do with everything from a home you've lived in for 40 years is a common issue for older adults and among the reasons they give for not being ready yet to move to a retirement community, ” says Paisley Valentincic, director of marketing at Lake Forest Place, a Presbyterian Homes retirement community in Lake Forest, IL. "It can be overwhelming.  We let them know there are organizations that specialize in helping people work through the decisions for what to keep and suggest options for items you can part with.”

Ms. Zeller says, "Our possessions are often connected to emotions and attachments. Clutter does not start as clutter. As we grow and change, our possessions are stepping stones to who we are today. Possessions unchecked can pull you down instead of lift you up.”

A founding member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers, Ms. Zeller will discuss this topic and share tips for: •    de-cluttering•    organizing•    making decisions•    letting go
