There are more than 12,000 cut-your-own Christmas tree farms in the United States, with more than 500 in Illinois. That's according to the University of Illinois Extension. And while 48 percent of Americans prefer an artificial tree, there are plenty who want the experience and memories of cutting down a fresh one.
