How We Got On

Urban Pop Play to Premiere on Lake Forest Stage - How We Got On at

Citadel

LAKE FOREST, IL - Nestled inside
the West Campus building at 300 S. Waukegan Rd, Lake Forest’s Citadel Theatre
is often described as a hidden gem by patrons and reviewers. Entering into its
11th season of professional live theatre, Citadel is cueing up a
delightfully daring first offering for the 2013-2014 Season – Idris Goodwin’s
new play How We Got On.

Directed by Josh Sobel, the play
is a coming of age story about teens finding their voice through the urban
street pop they love.

Citadel’s Artistic Director,
Scott Phelps, describes the play as “Equal parts charming and inspirational”
and describes his process for selecting shows for the Citadel stage.

“As Artistic Director I always
work to find a balance between crowd pleasers, old favorites, that will always
do well at the box office and newer works which, although not as familiar to
our audiences, challenge all of us to a novel experience.” And with How We Got On, Phelps believes he has a

winner in the challenge category.

Phelps says, “I first saw How We Got On at the Humana Festival of

New American Plays in Louisville and immediately I wanted to produce it here.
It is a compelling story about African-American and Hispanic youths growing up
in the white suburbs and finding themselves through their musical heritage. For
Citadel this will be our first opportunity to really showcase ethnic actors and
a chance for the community to embrace not only diversity but a great and
entertaining play.”

Opening night, and the Midwest
Premiere, for the show will be on Saturday, September 21 with the curtain
rising at 8pm. Performances will continue every Thursday through Sunday until
October 20 with shows at 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and 3pm
matinee performances on Sundays. An additional matinee will be held on Wednesday October 16 at 1pm.

Tickets cost $37.50 on Fridays and Saturdays, $35 on Thursdays, Sundays, and for the Wednesday matinee. Additional discounts are available for seniors, students, and groups of 10 or more. For tickets visit www.citadeltheatre.org or call the Citadel Theatre box office at 847.735.8554.
