Ft. Sheridan Lecture- Historical Society Program

Lecture in the Stockade: Fort Sheridan

The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society is offering an opportunity to hear the history of Fort Sheridan on the very site of the former military outpost. On Wednesday, November 20 at 10 a.m., Nicole Stocker, Museum Educator at the Lake County Discovery Museum, will share stories from the fort’s past and discuss its architecture. The program will take place in the former Fort Sheridan Army Stockade, now the performance space of the Midwest Young Artists.

The lecture is free for members of the Historical Society and $10 for nonmembers. Both pre-registration and on-site registration are available. Weather permitting, a brief walking tour will follow the lecture.

The civil and labor unrest following the 1871 Chicago Fire (including the 1886 Haymarket Riot) prompted business leaders Philip Armour, Marshall Field, George Pullman and other members of the Commercial Club of Chicago to discuss a military post near Chicago to keep order. How did Fort Sheridan end up in the backyards of some of Chicago’s wealthiest and most influential businessmen? Ms. Stocker will explore this and other questions as she presents a sketch of life in the military outpost.
