1937: Girls Riding on the Fenders of Cars; Newswoman Followed by Dog

The entries we post on a weekly basis will be from the early 1900s through the late-1930s at a time when was beginning to flourish as a community.

The entries are posted practically verbatim, except for the names of the victims or perpetrators of the crimes noted. They provide a fascinating reflection of the times and culture of that era.

The entries are from 1937. Just as an example of what was going on in 1937, Kent Chandler was elected mayor of Lake Forest, and Smith's Men’s Store opened at 662 Western Ave., according to the  timeline.

• Feb. 1, 1937: Ray Moore from the high school called and to say children are driving recklessly on school grounds with girls riding on fenders of cars. Dunn Baldwin on call. No one there when officers arrive.

• Feb. 5: Chief complained of drivers failing to stop at stop signs at Deerpath and Western and also Westminster and Western.

• Feb. 6: Roy Wells reported that Romanians from Bed Bug Row take the boxes from in back of the stores every morning, and let the garbage and papers blow all over the street. Night men check on this around 6 a.m.

• Feb. 13: A women from the Lake Forest News called and complained that a resident's dog continually follows her and tried to bite her. Tried to call resident but could not locate her.
