LFCDS Varsity Football Team Wins LCCC Championship

The Lake Forest Country Day School varsity football team captured the LCCC Football Championship last Saturday, October 26, beating St.Mary’s—Buffalo Grove with a score of 36-22. The win not only capped off an undefeated season for the Panthers, but a record of championship titles that have spanned four of the last five years.

Panther coach Bill Scroggins, who has coached the LFCDS varsity football teams for 22 seasons, says that this year’s team, comprised of seventh- and eighth-grade students, possessed many great qualities that led to their perfect record. “These boys genuinely enjoy the sport, and they enjoy playing with one another,” he says. “Their character also speaks volumes—they’re coachable, team-focused, and display above-average sportsmanship.”

Scroggins and LFCDS Athletic Director Ted Stewart attribute several factors to the success of the LFCDS football program as well as the athletic program in general. “All of our teams are ‘no-cut,’ which means that we include every student that wants to play,” Stewart says. “This builds inclusiveness into the team at the outset, and creates a place for strong bonds to occur. Also, the kids are fortunate to learn from a very experienced coaching staff. Bill’s been our head coach for 22 years, and Tim LaBrie, our assistant coach, played at the elite college level. When you have that kind of experience and longevity in a program, it shows.”

Coach Scroggins adds that very rarely do LFCDS student-athletes play above age-level, which is intentional. “We want to make sure everyone is challenged, but we also want to provide support for athletes of all abilities,” he says.

In addition to the football team’s accomplishments, the LFCDS boys soccer team (comprised of fifth- through eighth-grade students) ended their season by securing the first-ever LCCC Soccer Championship.
