Women's Board Awards Academic Scholarships

The Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Women’s recently granted its annual academic health care scholarships to 26 students who are pursuing health care-related education.  Each year, the Board selects winners on the basis of criteria such as outstanding academic achievement and exceptional promise in the field of health care.  A number of this year’s scholarships were awarded to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital nurses who are continuing their education.

The Board awarded a $5,000 Marion Warner Hodgkins Scholarship, $3,500 Helen Dick Bronson Scholarship, a $2,000 Christina Schulte Fisher along with 23 A.B. Dick Jr. scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,500 each.  The Marion Warner Hodgkins Scholarship is named for the first president of the hospital’s Women’s Board, who volunteered at the hospital for more than 50 years.  A.B. Dick Jr. was an active chairman of the Board of Directors; his family donated the land for Lake Forest Hospital.  The scholarships are supported through the fundraising efforts of the Women’s Board.

“This Scholarship from the Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital will allow me to complete my BSN without financial worry,” said Funk.

The Helen Dick Bronson Scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of A.B. Dick Jr.’s daughter. Helen was a member of the Women’s Board for 60 years and served as president from 1962 to 1965.

The Helen Dick Bronson Scholarship is awarded to one employee of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital whose position involves direct patient contact, who shows exceptional talent and promise, and who has been employed at the hospital for at least one year. The winner of this year’s award was Margaret ‘Peggy’ Eis of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Eis is a registered nurse, a certified emergency nurse and is trauma nurse specialist trained at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. She is working toward her BSN at Jacksonville University as part of the Magnet Accreditation achieved by the Hospital in December 2010. Magnet status is considered the highest recognition for nursing excellence.

“I am so pleased to be a part of the Scholarship Committee,” said Madeleine Bronson Dugan, granddaughter of Albert B. Dick, Jr., daughter of Helen Dick Bronson and current member of the Women’s Board. “Awarding scholarships that help further the education of future medical professionals is one of the best programs the Women's Board supports through its fundraising.”

The Christina Schulte Fisher Scholarship, was established in 2007 to honor the exceptional volunteer service of Mrs. Fisher.  Her invaluable commitment to and support of Lake Forest Hospital through membership on the Board of Directors and the Women’s Auxiliary Board, have been of immeasurable benefit to the hospital and the community. The award is given to up to three full time employees of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital who have been employed by NLFH for a minimum of one year.  This year’s award was presented to Maria Garcia ‘Grace’ Reyes of Round Lake Beach. Grace is pursuing her master of science in nursing at Walden University.

Chris Fisher stated, “It was a pleasure to award the Christina Schulte Fisher Scholarship to Grace Reyes. I was impressed with her strong desire for further education and her devotion to the hospital. The scholarship is funded by generous community members and seeks candidates who want to take their education to a higher level while working at the hospital. Grace Reyes fits that criteria to a ’T’. Congratulations Grace!”
