Lake Forest Obituary: Mary Lou Sundberg, 73

She was a teacher for children with learning disabilities who went on to found an educational company.

Mary Lou Sundberg nee Zeiloth, age 73, of Lake Forest, Illinois passed away after a long battle with cancer on June 1, 2014. She was born to the late Carl Robert Zeiloth and Mary Elaine Zeiloth on April 2, 1941 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Mary Lou attended Johnson High School (1956-1959) and Macalester College (1959-1963) in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mary Lou also received a Masters Degree in speech pathology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Mary Lou was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, and Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago.

Mary Lou was a teacher for over 30 years. She taught grades K through 4th, and children with learning disabilities. After retiring as a teacher, Mary Lou started an educational company called Sunform, for which she served as President and CEO for over 20 years. Helping children learn to read and write was Mary Lou’s passion. Through Sunform, Mary Lou developed and published a innovative, patent-protected reading and writing system for children called the Sunform Alphabet, and a suite of companion products geared toward helping solve literacy problems in and outside of the United States.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband Dean Sundberg, her son Paul (Lauren) Sundberg, her daughter Anne (Jeff) Stewart, and her three sisters Carroll Maier, Barbara Lindsay and Susan Henk. Mary Lou is also survived by her four grandchildren, Lane and Charlie Sundberg and Hannah and Russell Stewart. Mary also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. 

A visitation will be held between 5-8pm on Thursday, June 5th at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Avenue, Lake Forest, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, June 6th at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, 700 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, Illinois. Info – 847-234-0022 or www.wenbanfh.com

The Sundberg family wishes to express their deep thanks and gratitude to those who helped Mary Lou battle cancer over the years, and provided her with such loving care during her final days.
