Obituary: Laura Mae Daniels Performed with the USO

Daniels also taught chemistry at Ferry Hall High School in Lake Forest and at New Trier in Winnetka. She lived in both Evanston and Northfield.

Laura Mae Daniels, 87, who lived in both Evanston and Northfield, died Nov. 8 in Charleston due to complications of a stroke. Daniels taught chemistry at Ferry Hall High School in Lake Forest in the early 1960s and at New Trier High School in Winnetka from 1964 to 1983, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Tribune also stated that Daniels toured with the Sharon Rogers All-Girl Band as part of the USO after World War II. The group survived a plane crash and was rescued by a Japanese fishing crew that took them to a hospital in Hiroshima, five months after the atomic bomb had been dropped. Daniels, who suffered no major injuries in the crash, was deeply affected by the experience and went on to form a Peace Coalition at the First Congregational Church of Wilmette and marched on Washington in protest of the Vietnam War. Daniels was also an accomplished photographer and a world traveler.

Daniels leaves no immediate survivors. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
