Tallest Tree
We sat and talked of life and things and spoke of kids and trees and Springs …
‘Twas then I pointed out my tree
So bare of leaf and knobbed of limb
Find out what's happening in Lake Forest-Lake Bluffwith free, real-time updates from Patch.
And asked, “What do you think of him?”
He said, “By now there should be leaves,
Find out what's happening in Lake Forest-Lake Bluffwith free, real-time updates from Patch.
At least there should be bulging buds,
All other trees and shrubs are green,
I think you’ve lost your Tallest Tree.”
“But look,” I said, “I think I see
Bits of green on Tallest Tree.”
He looked at me most … doubtfully.
That was quite a while ago
And now that summer’s nestled in
I take another look at him:
Now towering in both height and leaves,
Thinking what the mind conceives,
Though others doubt will be,
Can don the clothes of whom we see
My living proof in front of me …
My lushly leafed out, Tallest Tree.

Happy Monday, dear friends! Here we go again, another new week in June, and I am staring at Tallest Tree as I write. This poem grew out of a real conversation I had and kind of leafed out from there. Often there is a bird perched on the very top of
Tallest Tree and I’ve gotten quite fond of it, so when I thought it might be dead, I checked it out pretty much every day. It is now towering over my street scene and beautifully decked out with leaves, so I am quite relieved. Hope it’s a happy omen for you and for me. Hugs and blessings!
