Blotter: Beware of Phone Scams Asking for Money to Receive Money

LAKE FOREST

Minor Consumption of Alcohol

Pope E. Morgan, 18, 13555 W. Maple Ridge, New Berlin, Wis., was charged with minor consumption of alcohol while Tatiana A. Moore, 22, 1640 Ravine Park, Highland Park, was charged with social hosting at 2:46 a.m. Jan. 15 in the 500 block of Sheridan Road. Lake Forest College Security called Lake Forest Police for assistance with two intoxicated students. Morgan had been drinking in Moore's dorm room and took her car without permission, driving it from North to South campus. Morgan and Moore were assigned to an administrative hearing Feb. 8 at Lake Forest City Hall. 

 

LAKE BLUFF

Scam

A resident in the 500 block of Pine Court received a phone call from a man who stated she had won a prize and needed to send money to claim it at 9:53 a.m. Jan. 18. The resident said the man on the phone asked her to send $2,500 in cash and she would receive $3 million in return. She told the caller no and hung up. The officer called the Illinois Attorney General's office and they are aware of the scam. The officer verified the number given by the caller originated from Jamaica.

Suspicious Circumstance

An officer conducted an extra patrol in the 100 block of South Waukegan following recent reports of a suspicious vehicle seen on the property at 5:47 a.m. Jan. 17. Officer met with the driver and advised him of the complaints. He said he was unaware of a problem and stated he stops there briefly in the morning to read his bible before continuing to St. Mary's Church for mass at 6:30 a.m. The driver said he would leave the premise because he did not want to make people feel uncomfortable. In a previous call at 6:17 a.m. Jan. 16, officers responded to the same address for a report of a suspicious vehicle. The complainant said the vehicle is often parked there from approximately 6-6:15 a.m., and is occupied by a white male with brown hair. The complainant said the man doesn't say anything or approach her, but is often writing things down.

Fire call

Officer observed flames coming from a large section of mulch pile at DK Organics at 12:45 a.m. Jan. 16 in the 600 block of Rockland Road. Attempts to reach the owner of DK Organics was unsuccessful. Lake Bluff fire engines responded to the scene and put the fire out. A similar incident occurred at 5:08 a.m. Jan. 14 at DK Organics where smoke was observed coming from a mulch pile. DK Organics responded then that it was aware of the situation. Lake Bluff Fire put water on the smoldering fire.
