Debit Card Fraud Yields Two Burglary Arrests

Police commend Chase Bank employees for tipping them off to the fraudulent use of a debit card, which helped them arrest the suspects. The woman was charged with burglary.

A man and woman were caught Friday evening attempting to fraudulently use a debit card to withdraw $3,500 in cash at Chase Bank, 219 S. Waukegan Road, at the Carriage Way Shopping Center in Lake Bluff.

Charles Wright, 41, of Dolton, Ill., was charged with burglary and identity theft, while his accomplice, Mazlina L. Newton, 23, of Waukegan, also was charged with burglary.

Lake Bluff police were tipped off by a call from Chase Bank about 5:24 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, after the couple approached a teller with the debit card, which belonged to someone in California. Upon arresting the two suspects, officers found they possessed numerous credit cards, according to Lake Bluff police.

Lake Bluff police commended the quick action of Chase Bank employees to contact police, noting in many of these cases the suspects are often in and out of a location before police can act.

Lake Forest police also responded to the call because 22 minutes earlier, Newton had entered a Lake Forest business in the 300 block of Illinois Road at 5:02 p.m., attempting to use a debit card illegally to withdraw cash.

Newton used a personal identification number belonging to another person to obtain in excess of $300, but not exceeding $10,000, according to the Lake Forest police report.

Both suspects were taken to Lake County Jail and were held for bond court. They were scheduled to appear in court Jan. 28. No further court information was available.
