Ex-Wife Gets Her Revenge and Classmate Crime

A look at weird crimes in our Patch region.

Local police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt.

Sometimes a cigar is just an act of vengeance

A Skokie man was found guilty in federal court for conspiring to smuggle "truckloads of Cuban cigars into the country." His activities were halted when his ex-wife alerted U.S. Customs.

APB for Santa's elves' accountant

Someone entered an unlocked apartment in Evanston and stole model trains and two adding machines.

Four wheel drive off

Someone stole all four wheels and tires off a vehicle in a Morton Grove parking lot.

Rocks get rolled

A Glenview resident reported that $100 worth of decorative rocks had gone missing.

The perils of a strong alumni network

A woman and her 19-year-old daughter told police that they were upstairs in their Wilmette home when they heard noises coming from the first floor. The daughter said that when she went downstairs to investigate, she saw a 20-year-old former New Trier High School classmate standing in the foyer, sifting through her mother’s purse, police reported. The daughter later told police that she recognized the intruder and that the two had mutual friends and that she had accepted a Facebook friendship request from him six months earlier, police reported.

Police said they tracked down the 20-year-old who admitted to several attempted burglaries.

Guy must have been pretty stupid to try to drive a truck from Cuba. Maybe it was an amphitruck?

Regarding the story of the Skokie man was found guilty in federal court for conspiring to smuggle "truckloads of Cuban cigars into the country," this points out yet again the senseless stupidity of continuing the 50+ years of the Cuban embargo. We import goods made in China into the USA daily yet bringing Cuban cigars into the USA is a crime "because they're commies." Canadians and Europeans are allowed to vacation in Havana but Americans can't. Our MLB drafts some good baseball talent from Japan and such Caribbean countries as Venezuela yet great baseball talent from Cuba can't play in the USA. Persons of Cuban descent have not been able to have personal contact with their relatives still in Cuba for half a century. Face it. Continuing the embargo makes no sense whatsoever and should be ended ASAP.

I enjoy your headlines, Emily, especially since you were apparently able to come up with them at 5AM when you posted this.

You know that coming up with the headlines and text has no correlation to the posting time, right?

Uhh, "truckloads" means the amount of cigars he was attempting to smuggle in could've filled several trucks, not that he was driving or using any trucks. Also Article never said he was bringing them in from Cuba since Cuban cigars can legally purchased in many other countries thruout the world. USA is the only country that bans import of Cuban goods.

I agree with you Red, all over this country we can buy Chinese Commie junk but a good quality cigar is forbidden. Guess all Commies are not alike. How many American soldiers died allegedly fighting communism but the U.S. government has done everything in its power to help the biggest communist country in the world to become a super power. If it says "made in China" I don't buy it!
