Golf Spectator Accused of Carrying Concealed Gun

Lake Forest police arrested a man who they said attempted to bring a concealed firearm into the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club Monday morning.

Mark T. Fedder, 48 of 30 North Oakley, Westmont, was found in possession of a firearm during routine security procedures at the main entrance of the golf club shortly after the gates opened at 7 a.m., police said in a press release.

“Based on information obtained subsequent to the arrest, concern was shifted to a remote parking lot on Riverwoods Road south of Illinois Route 60. A trained explosives detection canine from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms detected the presence of suspicious substances in an automobile owned by Fedder. Explosives technicians from the Waukegan Fire Department, using a remotely controlled explosives robot, searched the trunk of the car and determined that no explosives were present. However, two additional firearms were recovered,” Lake Forest police said in their statement.

The remote parking lot for the BMW Championship was closed during the search and parking was shifted to a planned alternate location. Riverwoods Road was closed to all traffic from Route 60 south to Everett Road at 8:50 a.m. while operations in the remote lot were conducted. All traffic on Riverwoods Road resumed and the parking lot was reopened by 10:50 a.m., police said.

Lake Forest police were awaiting approval Monday night of felony charges by the Lake County States Attorney’s Office.

In addition to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Waukegan Fire Department, Lake Forest police received assistance during the incident from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lincolnshire Police Department, the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and the Lake County Department of Transportation.
