Lake Forest Chiropractor Sentenced to 6 1/2 Years in Prison

Bradley Mattson partly owned six suburban clinics. He was sentenced for intending to defraud a private health insurance company of nearly $5.9 million and causing an actual loss of more than $2 million.

Bradley Mattson, 51, a Lake Forest resident and the part owner of six suburban chiropractor clinics, was sentenced to six and a half years in federal prison for fraud, the Justice Department announced Monday.

The specific charges were intending to defraud a private health insurance company of nearly $5.9 million and causing an actual loss of more than $2 million by submitting false claims for certain services that were not medically necessary or were not provided to patients, the Justice Department said in a press release.

Mattson pleaded guilty in September to one count of health care fraud, the release said, admitting that he engaged in a 10-year scheme to defraud Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois through all six clinics that he owned with two co-defendents.

Between 1999 and 2009, according to the release, Mattson co-owned and operated Hawthorn Physical Medicine in Vernon Hills, Woodfield Physical Medicine in Schaumburg, Stratford Physical Medicine in Bloomingdale, Algonquin Physical Medicine in Lake in the Hills, Northshore Physical Medicine in Niles and Cumberland Physical Medicine in Norridge with co-defendents Steven Paul and Neelesh Patel, who are also both chiropractors.

According to the Justice Department press release, court records stated that Mattson would direct patients to receive an initial x-ray and pre-set schedule of clinic visits for a period of six months without regard to the actual medical necessity. He also had the clinics' staff order MRI exams and neurological diagnostic testing without regard to necessity.

Matson, who will begin serving his sentence on Jan. 25, was also ordered to be restitution totaling $2,097,031, the release said.

Paul, 41, of Northbrook is awaiting sentencing after also pleading guilty to one count of health care fraud in September, the Justice Department said. The charges against Patel, 37, of Glenview are still pending.

The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Renai S. Rodney.

I think the best career for any new doctor who wants to pay off his medical schools bills is to defraud!! Did this boob think he was going to get away with all the crime and not have anyone find out? I wouldn't doubt that my physician might be doing the same thing because he always wants to see people more than six visits a year. He also has Medicare/Medicaid patients. Isn't this the second Lake Forest resident who had poor business practices? I believe the other person was the guy who owned the Wonder! Store in Deerfield who never paid his vendors. Look out Big Brother is watching!!!

Anywhere you go in Lake Forest for medical means how much they can charge your insurance company and get away with it for unnecessary testing. I went into Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital with a classic case of acute bronchitis and my insurance company and I got a bill for $35K. Said my condition was CRITICAL and needed to be rushed into the cardiac catheterization lab immediately before I said enough of this BS and walked out. Much wickedness throughout the medical community here.

@lisa, we have paid double! he is going to jail--where he belongs--to correct his wrong b/c he committed FRAUD, which if you would understand the law, is a crime. He made the wrong choice illegally and must face the repercussions of his actions. Yes, I agree with you that the country is out of control, b/c of idiots like him and liberals such as describing of yourself, who continue to expect everything for free with no discipline, instead of working for it the old fashioned way like we ALL have done. I'm sure it weighed heavy on the court knowing this criminal has a family, but again IT WAS HIS CHOICE TO COMMIT FRAUD.
