Lake Forest Resident Falls Prey to Grandparent Scam

Theft by deception
March 29: An officertook a report from a resident who was called by someone claiming to be their grandson, who purported to have been arrested in Maryland for DUI. The caller requested the victim wire bond money to their “Public Defender” using the Money Gram service at Wal‐Mart. The victim complied and later learned their grandson had never been arrested nor requestedmoney. This deception is not unusual in our area and is usually perpetrated using the Money Gram, Western Union or Xoom services. Please be extremely cautious about wiring money to anyone you have never met personally, or to anyone you do not normally wire money to. See the FBI’s website for further information.

Possession of drug paraphernalia
April 3: Lindsey J. Hanawalt, 18, of Lake Bluff, was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia after school staff located a cannabis smoking pipe belonging to Hanawalt in her possession.

Parole violation
April 7: Police responded to Route 41 and Westleigh for a minor traffic crash. Upon investigation they discovered that Luciano Valencia‐Morales, 43, of Highland Park, who was one of the drivers, was wanted on a Cook County Warrant for a Parole Violation. Valencia‐Morales was transported to Lake County Jail for return to Cook County.
