Man Arrested for DUI Shows BAC Three Times Over Limit: Police

Two men were also arrested for stealing bikes from Lake Forest Open Lands.

DUI

Police responded to a call about a possibly impaired driver at routes 60 and 41 at 9 p.m. June 3. An officer spotted the vehicle described and followed it. He saw it swerve over several lane markers and hit the curb twice.

The driver, Khushaba Y. Zawiti, 61, of the 8000 block of Keating Avenue in Skokie, admitted to drinking and failed a field sobriety test, police said. A breath test showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.262.

He was charged with DUI-alcohol, DUI-with a blood alcohol content great than 0.08 and improper lane usage. He was released on $3,000 bond with a June 27 court date.

An officer saw two men, later identified as Procoro Plata-Martinez, 22, of the 3000 block of Arthur Court in Waukegan, and Jorge R. Velazquez, 29, of the 1400 block of Juneway Terrace in Round Lake Beach, placing two mountain bikes into their truck trailer while stopped on the side of the road at Westleigh and Wallace at 2:30 p.m. June 3.

The officer spoke with them and they told him they had found the bikes. Another officer tracked down the bikes’ owners, who said the bikes had been stolen from Lake Forest Open Lands while they were walking there.

The men were charged with theft, released on $1,500 bond and given a June 27 court date.
