Son of former Chicago Bears coach stopped a block from his home. This time the charges are a felony.

Mark Ditka, 49, of Deerfield, son of former Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka, was arrested Sunday on felony charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune.

According to a report on CBS, Deerfield police found an unmarked bottle of hydrocodone pills in Ditka’s vehicle. He refused to take a breath test and was also charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license, according to the CBS report.

Police stopped Ditka at 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning for erratic driving near the intersection of Waukegan Road and Central Avenue near his home, according to the Tribune. He was given field sobriety tests and refused to take a breath test.He is free after posting a $25,000 bond.

Prosecutors approved charges Sunday and Ditka was taken to the Lake County Jail, according to a report in the Chicago Sun Times. He will appear in court Nov. 2.

In May, Lake County Judge Helen Rozenberg ruled the breath test Ditka took during his earlier arrest could not be used as evidence, according to a report on Patch.

Mike did the best job he could. There is no istructuin manual or Parenting for dummies book. As a parent you have one chance to do the best you can. Most of us learn the do's and dont's from our experiences. And many more of us were raised in the inner city by less than perfect parents and we are fine. Then you have the upper income on the Northshore and their parents are involved and get the best schools , coaches, tutors and then some of these children grow up and become a Bernie Madoff's, Alcoholics and Junkies. It is unrealistic that the cause of these problems are the parents fault. Like my Father always told me you are 3 times 7 that makes you responsible for your decisions so make good ones because you will end up being held accountable for them. Mark is 49 He's his own man.

Yes upbringing has nothing to do with how you turn out. Come on. Mike is a hard drinker and his kids have turned out to be that also. Wanna wash your hands of your kids and say I did the best I could, fine. Maybe some tough love and getting himself AND his kids into a program would be the best parenting decision right now. Otherwise somebody is going to end up dead and it won't be one of them.

You are correct But at this point all Mike can do is give him all the support he can. And pull the safety net if Mark does not get help. And it could be that Mike and Mark go together into a program (as you stated ) at the very least this would be a very good start to get their lives back on track. And turn a negative into a positive. Mark is 48 and he along with Mike is at the perverbial cross road. I believe and pray that Mike and Mark will make the correct choice !!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel sad for his kids (I know he has at least one that is only 8, because he was in my childbirth class) and scared for my kids with a drunk loser like him consistently being let back on the roads! How many times is this guy going to get another chance? He will kill someone!
